Pediatric division, Narayana Hrudyalaya, Bangalore
Pediatric division of Narayana Hrudyalaya, Hosur Road, Bangalore is great. My 11 months old daughter was successfully operated for holes in her heart (1 VSD and 1 ASD). Surgeon: Dr Colin John. Paediatric Cardiologist: Dr Sejal Shah. Pediatrician: Dr Parimala
Few Tips:
Surgeons are very busy. They look after the patient but do not have time to explain you or clarify your various doubts. Assistant surgeons have more time to clarify your queries.
Hospital premises, cleanliness, staff, nurses are very helpful and understanding.
Please do not go by medicines suggested by hospital pediatrician Dr Parimala to reduce infection, if any, in POST (pre-operation test). Consult your own pediatrician. There should be no infection prior to admission for cardiac surgery.
PITU (Pediatric ICU) houses many children in one unit. It is best that child is released as soon as possible to Wards as per doctor’s advice. Reason being that infection of other children can impact your child. Nurses take care but would not hear anything about how you fed and what you fed. Most disturbing part post-operation is visit to PITU.
First forty eight hours from release of child from ICU to wards is the most critical and disturbing phase. Child may get fever, be unable to sleep, cry all the time.
Taking care of intravenous drip catheter is important for infants – Infants tend to scratch the catheter needle making it useless forcing sisters to change it. Changing catheter is very painful. Suggest you to tie around the catheter with pieces of cloth to make it a small soft ball around it.
In case child problem is a VSD, I would suggest going for operation after 6 months of age. VSD cause two issues: (1) hardening of blood veins due to higher pressure (2) slow but steady development of aortic regurgitation defect
Overall I would give following scores in a scale of 1 to 10:
9.5/10 to surgeon Dr Colin John (reduced 0.5 for not communicating with anxious parents)
9/10 to Dr Sejal Shah
9/10 to cleanliness, security, nurse, support staff
6/10 to administrative staff (Insurance staff, etcetera)
4/10 to Dr Parimala
I see many negative reviews regarding adult cardiac surgery at Narayana Hrudyalaya. Might be true. But for paediatric cardiac/heart care, I think Narayana Hrudyalya is simply the best in terms of cost and quality of treatment.
