Making a thriller is no easy task. But Abbas-Mustan, the director-duo are masters in making thrillers and suspense movies. Their movies have always entertained me fully and therefore I do not miss even a single movie of theirs. And therefore Naqaab was the movie on my ‘to-be-watched’ list. And yet again, Abbas-Mustan does a brilliant job in Naqaab. They prove that they are one of the finest directors of this country.

The story of the movie: Sophia (Urvashi Sharma) is a young girl settled in Dubai. She was engaged to a multi-millionaire Karan (Bobby Deol) and soon both of them were going to get married. Sophia, in order to celebrate her engagement, goes to a five star restaurant to celebrate. Here she comes across Vicky (Akshaye Khanna). Vicky falls in love at first sight with Sophia. Sophia too gets attracted to Vicky and starts loving him. Finally her marriage day arrives. Whom she will choose-Vicky or Karan?

The story of Naqaab (written by Shiraz Ahmed) is near perfect and has some glitches, but though the writer has written it with utmost care and thinking. And the masters, Abbas-Mustan made the near-perfect story into a well-made suspense thriller, which they have tagged as ‘The Most Shocking Thriller Of The Year’. A perfect tagline for such a movie!

Naqaab is little different from the other movies of Abbas-Mustan. The reason:

  1. There is no character in the movie placed just for the sake of humour. In Aitraaz there was Annu Kapoor and her wife (forgot her name), in 36 China Town it was Jhonny Lever, etc. Here in Naqaab there is no such character.

  2. In most of the movies of Abbas-Mustan, the name of the leading actors and actresses is Raj and Priya (in 36 China Town, Aitraaz, Ajnabee etc). That’s not the case in Naqaab.

Naqaab is only of two hours and starts off very well. From the first frame, the viewers are hooked onto the screen. The romance and the fun and light moments in the first half do not bore even for a single moment. The second half, too, was highly engrossing and the suspense, which is revealed in the last 30 minutes, comes as a bolt from the blue. The climax was excellent and just.

However, there are little problems with the movie. The story of the movie is very ‘hatke’. Also the suspense may not be liked by everyone.

Akshaye Khanna again does a very good job! He is extremely likeable and gives an excellent performance. His acting got better in the second half. He is also going to be seen in the movie ‘Gandhi My Father’ in which he has done far better job! Good!

Urvashi Sharma was amazing! She looks ravishing, has a wonderful smile, and gives wonderful performance. Not to forget that this is her debut movie. She too is extremely likeable. Not in a single scene did she too any overacting. And plus, she has already signed ‘eight-flim-deal’ with Tauranis (Tips Films)! Surely, she is the new lucky girl of Bollywood!

Bobby Deol gives an okay performance in the first half but he does a fabulous job in the second half. With such a nice performance, he proves that he is one of the finest actors!

Vikas Kalantari, who has done films like Nayee Padosan, has a supporting role here. He was good. Vishal Malhotra was perfect. Raj Zuthshi doesn’t have much to do but though he does a great job.

Pritam’s music was okay. The songs, which stand out, are ‘Teri Yaadon Mein’ and ‘Aye Dil-Female Version’, which do not leave our minds for a long time! Salim-Sulaiman’s background score is as usual perfect and superb. Ravi Yadav’s does an extra-ordinary job as a cinematographer. Husain Burmawala’s editing was good.

Shiraz Ahmed’s story was a little bit faulty but overall it was amazing. His screenplay was highly engrossing and builds up the movie perfectly. Well Done!

Abbas-Mustan’s direction is as usual excellent and amazing. Because of their direction, not once do you come to know who will be the real villain or what will be the suspense. And plus, they even give us hints as to who is the real villain. But still we wont be able to figure it out! This is what is called as ‘outstanding direction’! Abbasbhai-Mustanbhai, hats off to you! Keep entertaining us!

Some of the best scenes of the movie:

  1. The first scene of the movie

  2. Akshaye Khanna’s entry

  3. The scene in the five stars hotel Hyatt (damn funny scene!)

  4. The scene when Urvashi goes to Akshaye’s house just before the intermission

  5. The wedding day sequence of Urvashi and Bobby

  6. The entire 30 minutes

On the whole, Naqaab is indeed ‘The Most Shocking Thriller Of The Year’. It has everything required for a suspense thriller. It may not be acceptable to everyone. But though, I think it deserves to be watched!
