It’s interesting how we pay someone to terrify us. While evil brothers would gladly do the job, we’d still prefer for some famous celebrity to do it for us. And why not. It’s fun.
With that desire to scare myself silly and spend sleepless nights thinking about ghosts, I went to watch Naina. The latest in the recently rediscovered genre of horror movies.
Prior Preparation
Nail-cutting. If anyone’s ever watched a horror movie with girls they know what I’m talking about. When I was out for Bhoot with these same friends I discovered that they resorted to digging their nails into the flesh of whoever’s hand they held on to on being terrified. So chop chop. The nails had to go. A bad movie could give you a bleeding heart or a bleeding head.. but I didn’t want no bleeding hands!
First Day First Show
A first day first show of the movie was a must. I didn’t want to relive the disaster of kaal where people were busy messaging the thrilling secrets of the tiger-movie to me. I wanted to keep the suspense alive till I saw it. So the answer to that was to watch it before anyone else did :)
The First Half
With some very real and scary moments, the first half did an excellent job of keeping the viewers in their seats. Some scenes had heart rates escalating like nothing on earth. Which is just what naina’s promos promised. As the story progressed it got more and more intriguing. I for one could not guess what was to follow and eagerly awaited the beginning of the second half.
The scenes were interesting and scary. They promised a great second half.
The Second Half
What was on in Naina’s life? Why did she see things? Why did she see herself differently?
I couldn’t wait for the answer to those questions.
Did I get the answers? Yes
Were they that great? Hell, no.
The second half was pure rubbish. With Naina going to India in search of answers, the movie lost its plot. From eerie it went to too filmi.
The makers tried desperately to show the emotional aspect of Naina’s problem and did all they could to make it scary as well. BIG mistake. It would’ve been so much more exciting to have a two line earth shattering explanation to Naina’s turmoil as the curtains came to a close. Nobody wants to see half the movie explaining why the first half is the way it is. Too much explaining. Too much of underestimating the viewer’s intelligence.
What I Liked
The doctor guy is cute. And for the first time I saw a movie in which a guy is there for pure eye-candy and nothing more :) He didn’t have two important dialogues in the whole film. What a waste!
The computer effects are simply superb. The final scene where a subway station blows up is very well done. Full marks for that. The paranormal could never have been so real without those computer guys.
The wardrobe of all the actors was good. Suited their characters.
What I Disliked
The make up was BAD. The lil girl who’s supposed to be bald had this hideous orange coloured bald-wig that made her look so silly. The attention went to the unreal bald head than anything else.
The second half had too much nonsense. It was to signify the search, the mystery and the answer, but made you feel like you were watching some stupid old tale that refused to let your brain work. All it did was feed you with the answers and explain them over and over till your brain died of disgrace.
Khemi’s breasts. I’m sure many men would put them under the previous caption, but they were ridiculously big and she dressed so stupidly that they ended up demanding more attention (from men and women alike) than the story itself.
Sum it Up
The second half was so bad that it totally took away from all the hard work that went into the first half of the movie!
It just didn’t make sense.
