Naach ()

Genre: Love Story, Attempted musical! J

Released: 12th Nov ‘04

Director: Ram Gopal Varma

Cast: Abhishek Bacchan, Antara Mali, Ritesh Deskhmukh

( Exceptional, Brilliant, Good, Average, * Avoidable)

Story NOT revealed in the review!

In short: An intense love story that keeps getting intense with every frame. It is a silhouette of egos, values and career against an intense love story. No, this is not another Rangeela. If you love cinema that travels path less trodden, this one is hand-picked by me for you. Watch it with friends or go alone with your ponder-cap.

The highlights:

RGV – he makes good movies, he makes bad movies but he makes different movies

Abhishek Bacchan – this guy will make it big in Bollywood one day

Choreography – simply outstanding, simply different

The let-downs:

Loose script

The limiting factors:

Only for metro audience. The theme difficult to understand for masses.

Music is just above average whereas this story calls for an outstanding score.

A little more about the movie: When it comes from RGV, you can be sure it will be different and so it is. The two lovers are shown to be mature but ideologically different.

Even before the release, there was a big hue and cry over the skin-show in this movie. Let me make one thing clear that the skin-show in the movie is not of the titillating variety. It is simply to let you see ‘naach’ or dance as an expression of music through a human body.

A few pointers to help you understand the choreography better: In song ‘Bandhane lagi kyon kisi ke saath zindagi’, try to look beyond the exposure and see each of Antara Mali’s muscles contract and relax in sync with the music and mood. In songs ‘Naach naach ke’, you will notice only one leg covered, only one eye being highlighted using full eyelashes, and many things of this sort. To put it plainly, you will notice a strange kind of newness in the unbalanced makeup that has been attempted. This can be seen as a prop too. Similarly, all songs have something new in terms of choreography – my favorite is ‘Rakht ka yeh gubbara’. Look out for the expressions and body language.

Arguably, this is one of the better movies made this year.

Acting Performances: Antara Mali is a director’s heroine (pun intended). She does what is asked for by the director and thus, puts up a brilliant show every single time she appears on the screen. Ritesh Deskmukh is above average but he needs to work on his facial expression. Supporting cast is adequate. Abhishek Bacchan seems to be heading the right way. He appears very natural. Though he needs to slim down a bit, he has what it takes to make a superstar – expressive eyes, good voice and an imposing personality.
