Ek Hasina Thi ! . Review on NIIT, Barasat, Kolkata

Hi ! me too was on the same boat once !- NIIT !

Once upon a time - ek hasina thi (me that is) - joined GNIIT, pursued it in kolkata, salt lake. that was Nov 1994.

Positive points: At that point of time course materials were given on time - on the first day of the semester in fact. our faculties were good - at least the faculties who taught me. Machine room assistance was good - faculties were helpful. Things were fine - till I completed the course.

I got 85% over all - I was good in programming - I had developed Front office automation for hotel billing in C++.

I did RDBMS project on Data Distribution in Sybase. So far so good.

I was sent for PP in The Park. I was dumb basically - the placement executive counseled me that Hotel, Service industry is good - comfortable - join it - per month stipend Rs. 3000/- ! that was a good deal for me.

I was told that since I am just a plain graduate (Zoo.Hons) without any MBA degree and all- Rs. 3000/- is big deal. I accepted it.

My work profile was that of a Trainee. My work included the work of: a business executive - making photocopies for customers.(can be done by an illiterate also), typing and taking out reports for the F&B Department.

Human Resource executive - entering database and editing the human resource manual in MS word!

• my c++ and c language knowledge was speedily going to waste - frustration was creeping in me. young boys and girld - younger to me were coming from Hotel Mgmt. Institutes and were drawing more salaries than me !

  
  




• I had to address them as Sir and Madam !! they were pretty dumb - you do not need much brains in Service Industry ...just a good figure and a smiling face and the art to mix rum and coca-cola .. anyways - my PP got over - I did not leave in the middle as my placement mentor said that she will not give me the NIIT certificate!

  
  




• I got afraid ! my retired father had already spent 80,000/- plus - I had to get the certificate. PP over

  
  




• I waited for placement - in the meanwhile I placed my resume in almost all placement agencies in kolkata. no one called me.

  
  




• I was at home for six months ! without a job ! - I took up a course of Multimedia from a local institute in the time being.

  
  




• suddenly I got a call from NIIT, for HCL Frontline ''Dragon Naturally speaking'' software training. I accepted. They did not give me any appointment letter. I approached the authorities asking for appointment letter. the NIIT placement started showing its true colors !! - they said that they have done me a favor by calling me in the first place ! my SOL period is over !! ''NIIT is not going to place Aparna for the rest of its life '' - this is the fav. one liner that they use with all.

  
  




• I asked for appointment letter from HCL authorities - they said that they do not give anything in writing coz' then if you work for 6 months or so and are still not made permanent - the you can sue any company that you have worked for.

  
  

When I had joined NIIT I had heard people say that a cycle goes on - you are placed then kicked after 6 months then someone else is placed. since NIIT is sister concern to HCL, they played with my career !- they ruined my career ! and the inevitable happened - I was kicked out after 8 months - they said that HCL is performing poorly so we are purging some employees - I was the chosen one - they Shift deleted me...I will shift - delete them too...if I ever get a chance ie.
