When you hear that a movie is titled “The Hidden Face”…what comes to your mind? A cheating person, treacherous plans, some thrilling mysteries or at least a tiny hint of anything that is secret or hidden. Likewise when you start watching a movie that is named “Murder 3”, adapted from “The Hidden Face” and after its thrilling prequels, you do expect at least something murderous about this movie directed by Vishesh Bhatt. But you’ll be really shocked what’s in store for you at the end of the movie… when you realize that the name of the movie is totally inappropriate.
The plot of the movie, which is so pitiably beyond any logic or reason, starts with a high-profile photographer Vikram (Randeep Hooda) who watches a video of his girlfriend Roshni(Aditi Rao Hydari) where she declares that she is breaking up with him (which is strange because Roshni had given up her own career just to be with Vikram and had moved with him to India from South Africa) and that she is leaving him. Vikram seems devasted (it is questionable at the end!).
Soon enough and let’s say way too soon enough (to be precise that same night) Vikram meets Nisha(Sara Loren), his next lady love. Nisha then moves in with Vikram to his magnificent state-of-art house… In the mean time, it seems that Roshni had just vanished into thin air and investigators (specifically Rajesh Shringarpure as Inspector Kabir) suspect Vikram of some foul play… And that would be the first part of the movie. The second part is a complete mixture of misplaced love, foxy lust (thanks to Randeep Hooda), immature jealousy, bewildering betrayal and a lot many weird and even to some extent funny things that happen at Vikram’s house. Saying anything else about the story would be spilling the beans!
Coming to the cast, if you’ve ever wondered “Why was Jacqueline Fernandez cast in Murder 2? What was her role in the movie?” Here’s something new to wonder about: “What was the role of the entire cast of Murder 3?” Well of course, Randeep Hoooda looked dashing whenever he took off his shirt but what else was his role? A really insignificant portrayal of Vikram’s character – whether he really cared about Roshni or Nisha or he was a calculating cheat of a person – not clear.
His role was more or less like that of Jacqueline’s’ in Murder 2: to make the movie a little more appealing to certain target audience. Not his fault though! As for Aditi Rao Hydari – her expressions and looks matched her situation in the movie, disheveled and fluttery – that’s all there is to say as there wasn’t much else for her to do either. And as for Sara Loren, she looked pretty and dumb throughout the movie. Overall poor casting.
The music is also average, not as charming as you would expect it to be.
Undoubted being released on Valentine’s day with a catchy tagline like “This Valentine…Love will be murdered” gave Murder 3 an edge but once you’ve watched this movie you’ll know that the movie is severely love-deficient. On the whole, the plot is very unconvincing. The storyline –though a mixture of too many feelings and emotions is not clear. Yet the movie is not completely wanting in thrill because initially I got all worked up that maybe I was tricked by my friends into watching a horror movie…
It really gives you that creepy feeling with all the voices that Nisha hears, the frequent power cuts and storms outside the house, the eerie look that the housekeeper gives. Under the Bhatt banner, the movie has at least lived up to the expectation of creating an uncanny environment at the beginning but just after intermission when they start with the history of the house, anyone can guess what was going on (here’s a hint – reading The Diary of Anne Frank and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets might help). After you solve the puzzle of the love triangle formed between Nisha-Vikram-Roshni, till the end you’ll expect something dramatic or going by the name of the movie something more murderous but you’ll be sorely disappointed
*. The movie has its funny moments…one of mine was when Nisha on hearing voices in the bathroom think maybe it’s the ghost of her grandparents or her dad. But the fact remains, despite giving you goose bumps at the beginning, the movie should not have fallen under the murder series for one single obvious reason which you’ll know once you've watched it!
The movie is definitely not worth a second watch but if you have absolutely nothing better to do…not a thing in the world, then maybe a first watch would not hurt otherwise I would not recommend this movie to anyone.
