THE FILM:
Vidhu Vinod Chopra`s,Munnabhai M.B.B.S,directed by a debutante director,Rajkumar Hirani,stars Sunil Dutt,Sanjay Dutt,Gracey Singh,Arshad Warsi,Jimmy Shergill and Boman Irani.This is a comedy movie,about a son who pretends to be a doctor infront of his father,but in real,is a don.How much entertaining the film is?
THE CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES:
1.Hari Prasad Sharma(Sunil Dutt):Hari Prasad Sharma,is a simple man,with ’pagdi’ on his head,who thinks that his son is a very successful person in life,but actually he is not!Sunil Dutt,makes a comeback through this movie.On the silver screen,we`ve seen him after a long time,and he proves that his comeback is worth it!As Hari Prasad Sharma,he is impressive,and being Sanjay Dutt`s father in real life,it helps him in the reel life too,to be Sanjay Dutt`s dad.
2.Munnabhai(Sanjay Dutt):Munnabhai,is a carefree person,and a great ’bhai’,of his gang.His favourite line is 'bole to?'.He,later has to face a situation,where he has to become a doctor.Sanjay Dutt,these days is flying high.Next week,his much awaited film LOC Kargil is releasing and he is also going to star in a science fiction movie Rudraksh.With Munnabhai MBBS,he has made everyone more curious for his next releases.As Munnabhai,Sanjay Dutt excels.After all,he is the best ’bhai’ of Bollywood.Wasn`t he a don in Vaastav,Hathyar,Hum Kisise Kum Nahin,Khauff,Kaante etc.Even after playing a don so many times,he doesn`t give you ’the same old thing’,feeling.In every portion of the film,he is brilliant!
3.Suman(Gracy Singh):Suman is a doctor by profession,and she is also the daughter of a very successful doctor.She also provides the love angle to this film,as she is paired with Munnabhai.Gracy Singh,played a doctor,earlier in ”Armaan”,and now again she plays the role of a doctor,in which she surprises the viewer.She also has a very simple look on her face,which again matches with the character.
The rest are no less.Jimmy Shergill,gives his best performance ever.Another performer to look out for in the movie!Arshad Warsi,proves that he is becoming a sensible person,by not signing films like ”Jaani Dushman_Ek Anokhi Kahaani”.In his last film,”Waisa Bhi Hota Hai-Part II,he became a better performer,and in this one he is simply superb.Boman Irani is also competent,especially his laughing therapy is amusing!
THE STORY:
Munnabhai MBBS,deals with the story of Munnabhai,who is a don,whom we call ’bhai’,in local language.He has told his parents that he is a very successful doctor,so whenever his parents come to meet him,he pretends to be a doctor.One unfortunate day,Munnabhai`s father gets to know that whatever he was saying was a lie,when DR.Asthana,tells him everything about Munnabhai.Munnabhai is hurt to see his parents hurt,so he decides to be a doctor.Is it that easy to be a doctor?Will Munnabhai do what he has decided to?All these questions of yours will be answered when you`ll see the film!
THE WORK OF THE CREW:
Rajkumar Hirani makes an impressive debut,as a director.He handles all the comedy or sensitive/emotional scenes with ease.The scene where Munnabhai`s parents come to know his reality,is an interesting one.Also the scenes where Munnabhai is having 'pangas',with Dr.Asthaana will seriously make you laugh.Even the climax,is also effective.No one watches a movie to get to its middle,but to get to its end,and when the end is an impactful one,then what more could be better?Here,the director succeeds!Lajan Joseph`s and Vidhu Vinod Chopra`s screenplay is alright but not amongst the best!Binod Pradhan`s(the cinematographer of ”Devdas”),cinematography is of top class.Editing needs to be crisper,because in the second half,the film drags.Dialogues are first-rate,which may make you laugh,when Sanjay Dutt speaks them out from his mouth.Anu Malik`s music for the soundtrack is dull,if you listen to it,but the songs are situational,which fit into the movie.”Munnabhai MBBS”-the title song is fun to watch,where as the only good number in the soundtrack is ”Channan Channan”,but slows down the pace of the movie,although beautifully picturised.
ON THE WHOLE:
”Munnabhai MBBS”,is the perfect choice if you are deciding to see a comedy.The film is an unrealistic one,but then comedy films are usually unrealistic.If you`re tired,want to be entertained then,this is a must see.It has entertainment to offer,which a viewer wants,on the other hand it has some ”masala”,in it,which may prove beneficial for the movie.A GOOD ONE!
