Typical Fantasy Of A Teenager

This is a typical fantasy of a teenager. I have gone through this stage even as I joined junior college. This was the age when I was stepping out of innocence and towards adolescence, the time when I began to look at girls “differently”. Influenced by the typical love depicted in hindi films, I had my own dreams – fantasies. The strange aspect of these dreams was that I was always older than I actually was and didn’t care about my own identity. I mean I never saw myself as a wealthy son of an industrialist or hero or most popular hunk in college and yet I fell in love with that beautiful girl that haunted my dreams. She was so matured, serious in life, smart, not snobbish and didn’t take pride in her beauty. She was humble, simple, sweet, courteous and RICH. Also she didn’t care much about guys but she sure liked me a lot and had a soft spot for me – typical fantasy of a teenager.

Now 7-8 years down the line, I find my fantasy on screen in a movie called “Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai” – a light family entertainer with a story so unrealistic, so unpractical – probably an ideal fantasy. Me and a female friend (net friend) were flipping a coin over “Pyar tune kya kiya” and this movie. The toss had me spending Rs. 200 for two dress circle tickets for a new film whose review I had not heard or read. Ironical enough, I watched the oscar winner “Gladiator” and another splendid movie “Cast Away” in lower stalls. Now how many of you pity my plight – raise your hands….

The Story:

So begins this movie with a dream – not mine but of Tushar Kapoor, who is as jumping jack as his father Jeetu (like father like son). He dreams of – what else – girls wooing and chasing him in a disco club, only to be caught by his pious and strict father (Dilip Tahil). Crackle! Pop! Dream’s over.

So Mr. JJJ (Jumping Jack Jr.) is a kid (and is also kiddish throughout the movie), who fools around with a bunch of Tapori friends. Unlike our usual filmi tapori hero who is surprisingly also the university topper, JJJ is depicted as kid who has improved his scores from a just passing 35% to a whopping 36%. Papa is always vexed by his antics while grandpa always supportive. JJJ also is depicted as a simpleton and kid with warm heart and ready to help others. He is also brave and manages to sneak out the daughter of a politician to unite her with one of his friend who is madly in love with her. He can fight with 5 – 10 rowdy guys and is a great dancer too. So does kid have a girlfriend? Enter a mystery girl (Kareena Kapoor) from a fog. She gets out of car with little kids and lights up a cracker and jumps with more glee than the kids, gets back in the car and disappear. So much filmi!!

JJJ is left spellbound and gets lovelorn. The rest half of the movie is about JJJ’s desperation in trying to find the mystery dream girl. Then comes a twist where JJJ saves a small girl from accident (this one can leave the audience tensed) and miss KK watches the heroic deed. So now she is desperately seeking this real life hero. They finally unite in Simla and meet with an accident where hero kid saves her but he himself falls down the valley.

Oh yes, he is alive, few bones broken. The pair unites again and become best friends and many songs follow. All this while our desperate kid wants to tell KK that he loves her, but somehow or other just fails to. Now KK (like the girl in my dreams) is also serious in life and wants to pursue a career in “Indian culture” at Harvard university. Her hard work wins her an admission and she has to leave. JJJ is in tears cause his love is going away and he cannot verbally express his love. Then comes the END………….This is by far one of the best endings I ever saw out of 400 Hindi movies – its different, believe me and completely uncharacteristic of Bollywood.

The Acting:

Tushar is kiddish and often irritating. He looks like “guy next door” which is not objectionable, but then the filmi projection, like solo dance or poses for the camera, is what ruins the show. Believe me this stuff was good for Hrithik, Tushar looks pathetic. Sorry no comparisons here…but then this is his first movie – so maaf.

Kareena is a BABE!!! The movie doesn’t quite reveal her acting talents but with all the designer wear and looks, she is stunning on screen. Rinke Khanna (playing as Tushar’s sister) is the best in the movie and does her “sister act” with grace and talent. She is bubbly and yet a loving, caring, “nakchadi” sister and I loved her on screen. Others are OK, especially our body builder friend from Tata Yellow pages advertisement and the “fevi-quick” fisherman. The best comic relief is from Amrish Puri.

The songs:

My favourite is “Rang de dupatta mera” – hummable, good beats, glamorous Kareena and 7-8 beautiful babes dancing with her. “Rabba mere rabba” is good too. The song is good to watch too, though I found it funny when some 5 ladies would pop up in funnier places and dance even funnily saying “rabba mere rabba”. The scenes and backdrops in title song “Mujhe kuch kehna hai” are fabulous. “Maine koi jadu nahi kiya” is playful and enjoyable too.

The director:

For a welcome change, the comedy in this Satish Kaushik movie is GOOD so unlike his pathetic comedy in his earlier movies.

The movie:

Too dreamy and a good clean entertainer unlike the cop-politician-hero movies. However, the movie failed to impress me and was too filmy, our hero’s projection, Kareena’s entry etc. Many parts were not practical and like I put it – just a fantasy put on screen. It definitely was not worth the Rs. 100/person I spent.

Hence this review to recover at least half that money wasted. So go ahead and rate the review. Do see the movie, but on cable TV.
