StarCity! No you haven’t entered a city where you would find the filmstars themselves, but yes, you would get a chance to see them at Action! I mean in the movies at StarCity. Star City is a “modern” theatre located at Matunga, near Shivaji Park. I have been there only twice, but it has always been a pleasant experience. I just thought I would share some information about that theatre with you all. :) Location This theatre is located almost at the center of Mumbai, that is, at Matunga West, near Shivaji Park. It is located amidst residential buildings, in a quiet area, away from noisy and polluted atmosphere. You can breathe fresh air atleast! People commuting through train would also find it convenient. It is just 10 mins away from Matunga Rd. (Western Railway) and 15 mins away from Matunga (Central Railway). It is also convenient for bus commuters, however I don’t know which bus nos. go there. (I am a hard-core train commuter). It is also easily accessible through car, not many potholes on your way to the theatre, so your car is not subjected to torture! However, there are not much hangouts nearby, no good restaurant nearby (unlike Sterling with Mc. Donalds, Barista nearby). The Building Located at a corner, you would come across a black granite building, which would remind you of some kind of space vehicle. But beware! Don’t enter through the back gate if you are walking to the theatre. It is sometimes dirty with stale water and some moss growing in it. It is always better to enter through the front gate. There is some seating arrangement for the crowd with granite seats build along with the periphery of the building. However these arrangements are not adequate for the entire crowd. The vacant space is not much though. The luxury of space is absent. As you climb the steps to enter the theatre, you would feel as if you are entering some spacecraft (not all would agree though). As soon as you enter, there would be a balcony or a verandah type space to the left where you would find the aroma of popcorn and coffee teasing our nostrils. As you step in the lounge, the food counter would await you. Continue straight and you would enter the picture hall.

The interiors are too good. The walls are padded with square materials. There are wooden panels on the walls with illuminating lights, which add to the beauty. The ceiling lights give one the adequate light to find one’s way to their seats. All in all, the interiors do leave some impact on you. The air conditioner too is set at the right temperature. Neither too high, to leave you sweating nor to low, to give you shivers. A pleasant temperature with comfortable seats adds to the luxury. The leg space is not too great like Imax but not as crowded as Cine Planet too. The seats, though slide well, and there are glass holders attached to the armrests. Similar to Imax seats. (Beware! The rows start from the back…so don’t buy a ‘T’ row ticket, it is the first row there!) Security The security is good enough, helpful (yes in the way of tickets too! If you want tickets in the black, then the security near the door would have some; try it out, but at your risk! The security might change). Yet the security does not pester you much, but they are always available. The Bouquet of Movies Both English and Hindi movies are put up here; though Hindi movies are put up more. Atleast “sadu” movies have been put up less over there! The Crowd The crowd there is decent enough, just like other small new theatres (Cine Planet, Cinemagic). The guys and girls there are not hunks and babes! So don’t expect that there. ;) However you won’t find the ‘taporis’ there. And that’s the better point! Parking The parking space available is adequate enough. There is underground parking space and little parking space on the ground too. (I don’t know about the charges whether they are as high as Imax or proper like Cineplanet) Food The Coffee there is amazing. Bru Coffee and Nescafe. Really good, about the rest, they are OK..not too worth mentioning. However, you have a variety of foodstuffs available there ranging from Samosas to Burgers.. Popcorn there are of 2-3 varieties…so ye food lovers, you won’t be disappointed. The prices are medicore and not sky-high.. No Smells This is the first theater where I have seen the loo is underground…thus evading the question of any foul smells. Most of the times, the loo and food counters are nearby….(nose twitches)..which deflates all my love for food! So this is what I appreciate the most. The loos are well maintained and not much crowded. Housekeeping The entire theatre from the outside to the inside are well-maintained, clean and hygienic without any smells or odours..except yeah..of popcorn and coffee! So don’t worry about big fat rats nibbling your feet.(LOL). Well, that’s it! This is Star City ladies and Gentlemen! A good theatre with decent crowd and good location, what more does one want in life! Khana, movies and AC! Enjoy!
