Close your eyes for a minute or two and think of all the features you wish to have on your phone. What do you see when you open your eyes? You should be seeing Motorola SLVR L6. No? Sure? I am surprised you didn’t. Ok … then you would have not seen the phone yet; let me show it to you …

As soon as I bought this phone, I lost it. I searched for it inside my pocket for about 5 seconds to get back my phone! If you hate mathematics with decimals values < 1, then better use millimeters than centimeters to measure the thickness of this phone. They keypad is just carved out of the metal cover and you cannot find separate buttons for each key. This makes the phone still slimmer. If the silver flavor is beautiful the black version is gorgeous. The phones scores 150/100 straight away for the look. It is amazingly slim and sexy. But what is more amazing is the stuff that lies inside.

We will start from what we see - the display. If you see the in-built images, you will not feel like buying this phone. I would look like bad resolution. The screen size is not properly utilized for viewing a picture in the gallery. When the images are set as wallpaper, one gets to understand the actual screen resolution. It has some dense pixels and the resolution is quite more than satisfying. The phone can handle the regular jpegs and gif animations. Next we move to what we hear – the sound; I was previously having a Sony Ericsson model J200i, which boasted of the loudest of sounds. But it had heavy distortions at higher volumes. But this one will compete with my smoke alarm any day and still it doesn’t crumble at high pitch. Apart from monophonic and polyphonic tones, the phone also plays tones in mp3 format.

The phone was good to all my sensory things – feel, sight and sound that I even tried smelling it. It didn’t smell bad either!

Batter life is also good. We should understand that the battery life depends on many factors like weather, usage, and signal strength. Considering the ‘no service’ and ‘emergency calls only’ signal strengths that I have for the majority of the time and the average 20 minutes of call I speak or receive a day, the battery keeps my phone ON for more than 2 days. I am sure the battery would do much better in normal conditions. Charging happens really quickly, say about 30 - 40 minutes from absolute zero to full. The USB type slot is the one you use for both charging and for connecting to a PC.

The software acts as a brain for mobile devices and is developed so thoughtfully in this phone. It has got some really handy features, without which a mobile user might be struggling during the time of a call or SMSing. For instance, phones usually allow phone numbers to be inserted from address book when composing a SMS. But you will have to go to the address book twice if you want to insert 2 numbers. But this phone allows you to select more than one number in a single go, when you add address book entries in your SMS. There is also a smart faded preview of the word about to be formed in dictionary mode when composing a message. You don’t have to type the entire word to enter that word; you can just accept what is shown in the preview. There are many other thoughtful features like these built onto the Motorola software. But, I should be adding that Motorola could have given more thought about the navigation. The number of options one has to select to get to a feature is quite high (yeah, higher than the number of clicks one has to make to get to latest 50 reviews after RRCing a review on mouthshut).

The phone has got a camera too. But it’s just a VGA camera, out of which you cannot expect much. But still tries its best with a 4x zoom and multiple exposure levels too! There is Bluetooth connectivity with which we can transfer images, tones, address books (to other phones and a PC with bluetooth) and of course use the hands free. When we transfer bigger images, the phone automatically converts the images into a resolution of 640x480. But this does not happen with sound transfers in bluetooth. You might have to use the data cable and the software that comes with it to put mp3 in correct bit rate and other stuff. Strangely, there is only one goof-up I have found in this phone and it is related to Bluetooth. A Motorola phone detects all the other devices except another Motorola device nearby! (Is this not like missing yourself when you are counting the number in a group?!)

With just 10MB you might not be able to use it as a music player. You cannot extend the memory either. With a VGA camera and a 640x480 resolution the clicking too might also not be great. But the phone features are fantastic. The other mandatory expectations these days like a web browser, compatibility for java applications are also present in this phone. To sum it up it has loads and loads of features. But it is sad to see such a good phone available for less than Rs.5000 (Good from a buyers perspective isn’t it?) Motorola should stop working on making good phones (like this one) and concentrate on its marketing strategy. Few over rated phones are making lots of money and this one is under priced.

With style outside and substance inside Motorola L6 is worth twice the money you would pay. Go for it.

Motorola Add-ons:

  • Looks very similar in features to the more popular MotoRazr V3 except that L6 is not a flip model

  • L7 version comes with expandable memory and is a touch costlier

  • Black color L6 is costlier than silver color L6 (no added features, just the color costs more!)

  • If you are looking for megapixel camera models, you will have to go for V3i model. But that too has only 1.3 megapixels. Far too low considering the 3.2MP versions that have come up in other brands like Sony Ericssion and Nokia
