Recently I purchased a Motorola A780 mobile phone and believe me it was a really tough decision going against the nokia brand with its huge prescence and brand value, which I suppose all of you would agree. But I could not resist this beauty from motorola. This PDA cum mobile phone from motorola is a steal I guess at this value.

A little abouth the phone: It works on the linux OS, so no problems of hanging which is a pretty common snag with the nokia range of mobile phones. The PDA is touchscreen and illuminates when you flip open the cover and this simple looking mobile converts into a touchscreen genius. The PDA is supported by character recognition and QWERTY and pinyin support keyboard, so it is a breeze to write mails, memos and SMS, notes etc. The software also contains an office viewer but the lack of an office application editor application strikes you, so you are only left with viewing the document.

The software also includes the real player, opera browser and the regular phone features. This phone supports USB, Bluetooth but no infrared.

The internal memory is great(around 50 MB, I guess) and their is also a 128 MB micro SD card (i mean MICRO) which is provided along with the phone. The best part is you do not have to open the backcover and remove thae battery for inserting the card, the card slot is smartly placed on the upper side of the mobile phone.

Now some cons: The software that comes with the phone does does not support installation of mobile softwares, so u are left stranded with what is provided. But I tried the net and I found that u can install softwares with motorola desktop suite, so I went ahead and downloaded it, but to my amazement it does not support USB (phone will not be detected). I still have to try the bluetooth part.

For the N series fans, this mobile does not even come close delivering any sound quality, motorola has tried to rectify this by providing an average set of headphones, but myself being an Ipod listener and fan would rate these as a mile below average.

The ringer tone is very low so be ready to listen to people complaining to you about your not picking up the phone.

The worst part is the manual provided along with the phone, I guess the author has never seen this phone or he is from some other planet. The PDA functions of the phone have not been properly explained and infact such a basic thing as a manual network search has been ommitted. It took me 2 hrs just to do that.
