After a long time I went to a theatre to watch a movie, last one being Runaway Jury in May 2004 at Hyderabad!

Another effort by Mahesh Dattani who gave us Mango Schoufle 2 years back. This movie is a simple approach of bringing two world's together - be it the fusion of Carnatic and Rock Music or be it the City-Village thinking and upbringing. Its a must watch for anyone who loves music!

Swarnalatha (Shabhana Azmi) and Vaishnavi (Artist Name Forgotten) are good friends from same village whom music brings together. Swarnalatha gets a chance to sing in the city and she manages to convince Vaishnavi also to be a part of it.

They move ahead towards the city by bus and the bus meets an accident with a car on the bridge connecting the village to the highway! Swarnalatha loses her son Madhav and Vaishnavi also dies leaving behind her son Abhinay (Prakash).

Shabana feels that she is responsible and quits singing! And then we have Abhinay back from Hyderabad after 20 years. He is into composing jingles but wants to make out big on own with his inherited music from his mother. He returns to village in search of his mother's death anniversary and her violin themes remind him and he wants that violin.

Then comes into scene Nasser (Abhinay's Father) who shares a hatred relation with Swarnalatha. Abhinay leaves village and later gets the violin as parcel from Swarnalatha. He first tries to dispose it off... but then goes back to village to return it to Swarnalatha as he feels that his mother's Violin and Swarnalatha's voice went together always. Swarnalatha feels that Abhinay also has hatred feelings towards her, but he is a understanding youth, who feels all just happened as it was to happen and no one can help it.

Comes in to scene, Perizad Zorabain (Pinkie)... who joins Abhinay to make an own music troupe. Abhinay manages to convince Swarnalatha to sing thru her husband Shastri's help. Then starts the fusion of Carnatic and Modern music!

While on way to city, Swarnalatha is not able to forget the past while the bus passes thru the bridge and she is unable to attend the concert by the group.

The common link between Swarnalatha, Abhinay and Pinkie is that all had lost someone in the accident (Pinkie's drunk father was driving the car which the bus hit)... which she gets to know that her father was not the victim but the cause for the accident which took place during the movie...

And then Pinkie goes to Swarnalatha to learn Carnatic music, the village scenes are quite good during which Abhinay and Pinkie start to share a new relationship of love. Later, Pinkie manages to convince Swarnalatha that she was not responsible for the accident that happened and removes the fear of from her mind of traveling thru the bridge towards the city!

Then the concert begins, where Pinkie asks Swarnalatha to sing the song and mind me.... Shabana Azmi steals the show... Prakash as Abhinay does his part good... and Perizad also is good... Some comic scenes between a buffalo owner and Pinkie's Mother (Lilette Dubey) adds more flavor to the film, especially when she takes the buffalo ride or anytime manages to praise her customers in her boutique in the city. Nasser does his part well as the complaining father for Abhinay.

Over all a simple movie with a common past for the characters, about music that brings them all together... which is the truth of life... anytime... that music can never discriminate or make someone different!!!!

And not to forget the music by Mani Sharma (16 December fame) and Amit Heri. Vocals by Bombay Jayshree, Sudha Raghunathan, Ranjani Ramakrishnan, renowned carnatic and classical singer Kalyani Menon (mother of cinematographer Rajiv Menon, who has done cinematography for this movie) and many other technicians involved behind this simple story about fusion of music and life :)
