RIGHT off, note the yupside of Moksha: Ashok Mehta's dazzling camerawork, the stylistic flourishes, the imaginative set designs, the trance-like Jaanleva song-'n'-dance interlude, the utterly camera-friendly Arjun Rampal who flashes some signs of sturdy acting, and a strong, thunderous outburst of a scene by Manisha Koirala. Even though Mehta's directorial debut is a labour of love, for the rest of the way it goes right above your head like a sixer. The plot revolves around an idealistic lawyer, who is desperate to set up a Nyayadarshan legal co-operative for the have-nots. Oiks. Towards that aim, a bank managed by an ever-grinning Danny Denzongpa has to be robbed, lock, stock and smokin' gun barrels. In the process, practically everyone rolls over dead. And zounds, there is some shady business, too, about two women snoozing on the same mattress. Help! Suffice it to say, Mehta's mind-trip is his very own. There is no doubt that the cinematographer is a whiz in the techno-slick department. But alas, in terms of sheer story-telling, the outcome amounts to Moksha ado about nothing. Worth a look yes, but strictly as a fiesta of visual candy.
