I’ve always enjoyed action films but there have been very very few films that have actually given me goosebumps and even ‘heart in the mouth’ feeling while seeing the actors perform death-defying stunts. Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol is easily one of them! A fast-paced thriller, Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol boasts of some of the finest action sequences that you’ve have ever seen in your life! Go for it!

The story of the movie: Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) gets extracted from the Moscow prison by the IMF mates, Jane Carter (Paula Patton) and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) to accomplish another ‘impossible mission’ – discreetly infiltrating the high-security Moscow Kremlin archives and retrieve files related to a person called ‘Cobalt’ (Michael Nyqvist) who is suspected of getting onto some mischief. However, all hell breaks loose as Kremlin gets bombed and IMF is accused of doing so. The US govt initiates a ‘ghost protocol’ (no protection) against them and thus they become rogue agents. In a race against time, they have to prove their innocence and at the same time, stop Cobalt aka Kurt Hendricks from starting a nuclear war. Will they succeed?

Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol is easily the most gripping film of the entire MI series. The film is as long as 130 minutes but not even once does it slows down or drags. The tension level and the entertainment quotient remain at a high, giving the viewers a paisa vasool experience! The escape plans and the manner in which the Ethan and his mates carry out their operations has always been a treat to witness but this time, it’s up by many notches! Whether its Hunt’s escape from the prison or the infiltration into the Kremlin (hilarious and terrific) or the Dubai episode and finally the action in Mumbai, each episode was an experience itself! Especially the Dubai episode which the best or rather bestest part of the film! From Hunt climbing the Burj Tower to the exchange of files to the ‘catfight’ to the sandstorm scene, the Dubai sequence simply BLOWS YOU AWAY! Easily one of the finest action sequences that I’ve seen!

Any blemishes? Sadly, yes, especially in the Mumbai sequence. The signboards on the streets are mentioned in Telegu and Kannada and the cars were shown to have left-hand drive, something you’ll never find in Mumbai! Being a Mumbaiite, it was really disappointing to see the makers allowed such flaws in the film, especially when so much care was taken in other sequences.

Like every other time, Tom Cruise was outstanding as Ethan. I was a bit disappointed with his ‘not-so-cool’ look in Mission Impossible 3 but thankfully, Tom looks fabulous in part 4! And kudos to him for performing the stunt at the tallest building of the world (Burj Khalifa) sans the use of body double! Paula Patton was totally in her character and looked super-sizzling in the Mumbai scene! Jeremy Renner (as William Brandt) and Simon Pegg play their supporting but significant parts well. Michael Nyqvist was too good as the antagonist. Apna Anil Kapoor (Brij Nath) did really well in his 10-minute role and looked quite suave! Miraj Grbic (Bodgan), Vladimir Mashkov (Sidirov) Lea Seydoux (Sabine Moreau) and all others were good too.

Michael Giacchino’s music was gripping and tension-filled, as required. Robert Elswit’s cinematography was a treat to the eyes, especially in the Burj Khalifa scene. Action and VFX were at its best, making Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol one of the finest action entertainers of all time! Kudos should also go to Josh Appellbaum and Andre Nemec for coming up with such a brilliant story and script. Finally, Brad Bird’s direction was fast-paced and it was good to see someone who had helmed only animated films coming up with such a well-made live action film!

Some of the best scenes:

  1. IMF agent killed in Budapest

  2. Ethan’s escape from prison

  3. Ethan-Benji in Kremlin

  4. Ethan’s escape from hospital

  5. The Dubai episode (best part of the film!)

  6. IMF team at Brij Nath’s place

  7. The climax

On the whole, Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol is a high-octane action thriller that grips, thrills and leaves you stunned with its action scenes and fast-paced script! Lovers of action films should not miss it! Go for it…have a BLAST!
