I should let you all know. I'm a theater snob. Especially when it comes to musicals. So, if I sound a little full of myself, please forgive me.
I saw Miss Saigon in New York about 6 years ago. Being 15 years old and an aspiring actress, I was thrilled. Looking back, I see things differently.
The show takes place during the Vietnam war and centers around a love affair between an American Soldier and a naive Vietnamese girl. The show also attempts to offer some social commentary. I said attempts.
The music is pleasant to listen to, but some songs are filled with cheesey lyrics (for example, all of the love songs between Kim and Chris). It seems the the minor characters got some of the best songs. Namely the Engineer and Ellen.
I think the masterminds behind this production tried to make up for the thin plot and weak lyrics by distracting the audience with elaborate sets and special effects. Most memorably, a helicopter that lands on the stage.
Aside from the technical aspects, I don't have much respect for this show. That doesn't mean it didn't tug at my heartstrings. I am human, after all. I did sympathize with the characters and the extreme situations they were thrown into.
I recommend Miss Saigon (even though it doesn't sound like it). It will entertain you for a few hours, but it won't change your life or make you think. But, sometimes, we all just need to be entertained.
