Indeed it is very true that one needs to showcase the strengths and salient features of one?s country to make it more attractive for the foreigners. Ministry of tourism is supposed to do exactly that. But, the unfortunate part of it all in our case is, we Indians tend to showcase our political ideology before everything else.
The country comes a distant third or fourth in the priority list. The statistics indicate the real picture, today our outbound traffic is far more than the inbound traffic, and the inbound tourists are also from the lower strata of society from foreign countries, who do not have enough to spend. Foreigners are afraid of coming to India because the picture of India in the International arena is one of Terror prone with overdose of petty Politics. Politicians are a class apart indeed. They start from themselves, their village, their party, their state and then may be the country.
This very syndrome is visible in Ministries like Tourism. As soon as a new Minister takes over, he starts searching for the misdeeds of his predecessor. Actual steps towards tourist welfare, becomes a distant priority. The tourist police, visible in some parts of Delhi, presents a sorry figure, when it comes to the service of tourists, Reason ? these fellows do not have the requisite qualification to work towards the welfare of tourists.
They can?t even speak English properly, leave alone conversing in any other foreign language. Howsoever hard they try to look smart and civilised, when they open their mouth, the Bechara tourist tend to run away. And ministers are always busy in the political arena. Well exceptions are always there. For example, when Sh Jagmohan was the minister of tourism, he took special care of all our heritage buildings.
Today, all of the Nizammuddin area in Delhi remembers him for the good work done by him in clearing the area and making it attractive for tourists. But I am afraid the present incumbent, the TRACTOR lady, seems more interested in the game of one-upmanship and creating a political space for herself in her new party. Well these are initial days still, let?s hope for the best.
