A DELAYED Fairytale!

It’s funny how a film looses sheen if it takes too much time to hit the screens. Even if it boasts of bankable stars, viewers are not interested to watch such delayed and dated films. Very surprising! It can be a good film after all! Can a well-made film turn into a pathetic one if it doesn’t get a timely release? No will be the obvious answer but Milenge Milenge is an exception! Films usually release a year or two or max 3 years behind schedule. But Milenge Milenge is a film which has been in the making since 6 long years! But most importantly, the film was written in a different ‘age’ than the present one! More about it later! It is due to the ‘date’ factor that Milenge Milenge works but only in parts!

The story of the movie: Priya (Kareena Kapoor) is a happy-go-lucky girl who’s waiting for her Mr Right. A tarot card reader (Kirron Kher) tells her that she’ll be meeting her Prince Charming 7 days later at a foreign country wearing specific clothes at early morning. As destined, Priya is selected to go for the Youth Festival at Bangkok! And 7 days later, she indeed meets the man of her dreams, Immi (Shahid Kapoor). It was love at first sight for Priya and for Immi too. But as her trip is about to end, she gets the biggest shock of her life and realizes that Immi isn’t that guy for her. Immi tries to stop her and explains that they are destined to be together. To which Priya comes up with an idea that allows fate to take control of their future. Years fly and both are scheduled to get married (not to each other). Both aren’t happy and are yearning for each other. But both Immi and Priya are unaware of each other’s whearabouts. Will destiny which separated them bring them back together too?

Milenge Milenge has a wonderful first half. Although the boy-meet-girl-and-love-happens sequences are beaten to death number of times, it still strikes a chord in case of Milenge Milenge. The comedy in the first hour is absolutely brilliant. Laughs are guaranteed! Shahid and his gang entering the ladies hostel dressed as girls and Shahid giving an anti-smoking speech are sure to bring the house down! Then the twist just before the intermission is well treated and takes the film to a high.

However, the film starts falling in the 2nd half. The lovers are separated and their hearts are beating for each other and thus, they embark on a journey to find each other. Nice idea but the ‘journey’ tends to get too filmy and dragging. Since Facebook, Orkut and other social networking sites were either non-existent or weren’t too popular when the film was written and executed, the lovers are shown physically travelling to different places and even cities to find the other! And this doesn’t look believable. That’s why I strongly feel Milenge Milenge should have released much earlier!

The climax doesn’t work and seemed too obvious. Continuity is another issue with the film. Since the film was shot between huge gaps of months and maybe even years, the actors look different (especially their hairstyles) throughout the film! However, it doesn’t hamper the film much although it is very noticeable.

This is probably the last time that we see Shahid and Kareena together! Both play their parts extremely well. For a change, it was great to see Shahid in a complete chocolate hero avatar like the one he had in his beginning films! The role didn’t require Shahid to display any histrionics and gives a great performance. This is his last film of the year and will be directly seen in Pankaj Kapoor’s Mausam which will arrive next year!

Most of the scenes of the film were shot at a time when Kareena Kapoor was still plump and the size zero bug hadn’t hit her! Again, it was great to see her in her former avatar and performance-wise, she was a complete natural. Sarfaraz Khan as Shahid’s buddy does a nice job. The actor who plays Shahid’s ‘non-smoker’ friend was absolutely hilarious! Kirron Kher leaves a mark while Kareena’s fiancé was the most horrible actor in recent times! Aarti Chhabria was hardly there and it seems that her role was heavily chopped off. Satish Shah, Himani Shivpuri and Delnaz Paul were alright.
