If you see my review about Buying a Computer you will see that I write there “before buying computer at first learn the a,b,c,d of computer”. There is a reason behind this comment. After my Madhyamik Exam(Class X annual) I told my parents that I want a computer. They promised me before about that. So they had bought it. But I was absolutely ignorant about computer except some DOS command. When the vendors set the computer and went away I again turn the machine on. The version of Windows was 98 se. I didn’t know anything about mouse operation(what is right click or left click). I just played with mouse and suddenly saw that control panel has opened (start> settings>control panel) . I was unable to close that. Then I close the UPS switch (instead of shutting it down). In the next day one of my maternal dada (who knows computing) came to my house and wanted to see my machine. I opened it and then he saw that Scan Disk was going on. He shouted on me and wanted to know what I did to close my machine. After listening my comment he broke into laugh.

He taught me Windows 98 a week and after that I was able to operate basic operations.

Windows 98 is really very much user friendly. After Windows 3.1 and 95 windows 98 is the best(Though 2000 and Xp is now more stable).

Windows 98 is a Dos based operating system. The next versions of Windows are not based upon Dos. And the versions of Dos in Win 98 and Win 2k has different characteristics. Though Windows XP is much greater than Windows 98 but for a first learner Windows 98 is the best for self study.

Microsoft is now the richest IT company of the earth because of their perfect mechanism of these Windows Versions. Linux/Unix is very tough for self studying.

Windows 98 is perfect for installing any software ,networking, gaming, hardware handling.

Pros

Perfect version of self study. It is the best for first learners.

Easy to install this operating system on machine. But you have to learn some Dos commands. A floppy

As the greater percentage of soft wares are based upon Windows 9x versions it is easy to run those.

To add/remove hardware it is very easy.

Back Up is very good.

For networking windows 98 is perfect.

While 128 MB Ram is needed for windows Xp, for Win 98 only minimum 32 MB ram is needed.

Cons(compare between Xp and 2000)

Though Windows 98 was best in its contemporary but after the invention of Windows NT, Windows Xp I have to tell that now I am finding some Cons of Windows 98 version. For Networking though 98 is very good but Windows 2000 and Xp has much greater security. This is must be noted. Windows Xp is very much stable.

During hang of your machine you must have to restart windows 98(Restart Ctrl.Alt.Del )

Or reset. But for hanging windows 2000 and Xp is more stable.

Network Security is also very much stable in windows 2000 and Xp than Windows 98.

Machine security is also much better in Win 2000 and Xp.

For gaming also Windows Xp is better than Win 98.

In 98 you have to install sound card, graphics card from the motherboard C.D. But in windows Xp it is inbuilt.

Onscreen Keyboard, Narrator, magnifier, utility manager, accessibility wizard are absent in Windows 98.

And Above all windows Xp is the king of all windows.

But you are new in computer prefer Windows 98.
