My family has two computers, and both use windows. the only difference is one computer has windows 98, and the other computer has windows xp.
Windows 98 works well, and is good for the average person.
I however prefer windows xp because it is geared more for high-energy people. the colors are bright and energetic looking, you can customise pretty-much everything, have multiple users (we have 6) and each user on the user menu screen can choose an icon to be represented by.
I think whatever windows you go with though will work because windows seems to be a reputable company. I know they have very good customer service, they will be on the phone for hours with you trying to fix your computer. they only thing is you have to wait on hold for a long time because they seem to be understaffed.
