I have been using Windows 98 since past 5 years and have also used other versions of Windows and it's my contention that 98 is the best of all. It is fast, stable and user-friendlyoperating system that seldom behaves funny like other versions do. What more do ya want??

If you are already running Windows 98, it's likely that ur pc is old and you are planning to upgrade. My sincere advice is not to upgrade Win98 to any other version. Old is gold. Windows ME is very unstable and since there's no DOS in it, it's very difficult to troubleshoot, incase you have a starting problem. With 2000, you are likely to have a hardware conflict and your printer, modem or scanner won't work. And XP is too demanding. It just goes on eating RAM like a hungry monster. I won't recommend XP unless you have 256 MB RAM and 1GB free space.

If you are not very happy with your 98 (Did you upgrade it from 95, if so, perform a clean install once again.), I hope I can make you. Windows 98 is packed with many useful utilities like disk cleaner, scan disk and disk defragmenter. Run them all in that order. Throw away your internet cache, old temporary files, C:\Windows\Applog (hidden) files and clean up your hard drive (especially the C drive, or the drive where Win98 is installed). I suggest keeping internet explorer's cache size only around 20 MB, even if you have a slow (dial up) connection. For faster connections, you need even lesser.

You may even search the web for more useful tips on windows 98. I have a few of them on my site. If you wish, see this:

If you tried all this and still are not happy, it's time to make some purchasing. It is likely that your PC is at least 3 years old and you have only 32 or 64 MB RAM and 10 GB slow hard disk with lot of bad clusters on it. Add more RAM (make it at least 128 MB) and if possible, buy a new fast hard disk. Win98 will run smoooooooooooth...

Happy computing!
