The tech market is flooded with tablets these days and there is one for every one depending on user requirements. While utilize it purely for gaming and multimedia functions, others from the corporate world utilize its powerful business features.
Micromax, a fast growing company that has already proved its mettle in cell phone business has recently successfully launched its tablet called ‘Funbook’. It is reported that Micromax has already captured about 18% market in tablet business and has been introducing variants to keep up its market share. Among them is Funbook Infinity, their latest 7” tablet launched on 27th September, 2012.
The Funbook Infinity is among the budget tablets and hence its features and performance must be viewed in that respect. Priced aggressively at Rs.6999/-, like most of the Micromax products this also seems to be heading northwards due to its superb performance coupled with excellent value for money.
This 7” tablet comes in black colour and the build quality is decent. Once powered (keep the red button gently pressed until the Micromax logo first appears on the screen followed by the Funbook logo that keeps flashing until the unit is booted), it takes about 45 seconds for the home screen to appear. The screen resolution and viewing angle is commendable considering the pricing of the product. It has USB port, mic, ear phone socket but no HDMI port and Bluetooth feature. The two speakers are present on either side of the tablet and the sound output and quality is very good. The unit takes about 6 hours to charge first time and then about 4 hours during routine use from almost nil battery level. The battery performance is very decent.
The Funbook Infinity is powered by a 1.2GHz processor and 512 MB RAM. It has 4GB internal storage and is provided with another 4GB micro SD card (expandable up to 32GB). Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich OS forms the platform for the various apps and there are additional apps from Micromax store that includes Education (the USP of this product).
Internet connection can be done using the Tata Photon Plus (even 2G dongle works very well) plus it is Wi Fi enabled. A micro USB to USB cable is provided. An additional USB cable is provided so that the unit can be also charged over laptop.
Those who have already used Android Smart phones will find the user interface a lot convenient to get acclimatized to the operations and functions. For using the Micromax apps, one has to first register using an email id and create password. Once the link is clicked for activation by referring to the mail sent from them, the apps stores is then open. In the Education section, there are several offerings: CBSE syllabus, preparing for competitive exams, general education etc. A trial version is provided while the full version has to be purchased by filling the form and paying the amount. The whole tutorial is then couried to the user on a micro SD card. A very comprehensive and neat procedure! The tutorials are truly very valuable and therefore it Funbook finds a very high appeal among young students starting from Class 1 itself. Needless to say, I purchased this Funbook primarily for my daughter who is presently in CBSE Class 2.
As a working professional, I utilized the tools – viewing word documents, excel, powerpoint presentations very effectively by downloading ‘think free online’ and ‘documents to go’ from Android market.
Micromax has preloaded two recently released hindi movies on the SD card and viewing it on the Funbook was extremely satisfying as sound and video quality was very good.While Funbook Infinity and like it several Micromax products are categorized as budget products; they have demonstrated that an entry level product can be offered at relatively low price without compromising too much on quality and yet achieving desirable product performance. In that respect, as a user I acquit this 7” tablet Funbook Infinity to be a very compelling product and recommend it very strongly for students and working professionals.
