Metro is all about emotional, witty and a realistic depiction of urban relationships. The film depicts how the characters tend to forget their identities and also leave behind the ones who matter the most in order to fulfill their dreams and ambitions.

*Story:

Ranjeet(Kay Kay)** and Shikha(Shilpa Shetty) have been married for a long time and they have a young daughter too. Shikha is a homemaker and gets involved in the nitty gritty details of taking care of her home. Meanwhile her husband too is busy making money but at the same time he is bored with life at home and the daily squabbles between him and his wife, this only drives him further away into the arms of Neha(Kangana) his employee. Neha is an ambitious girl and is in a hurry to climb the corporate ladder and this she feels can only be achieved by compromising on her values. Rahul(Sharman) too works for Ranjeet and wants to climb the ladder and he too is like a puppet who jumps to fulfill all his boss’s needs like giving him the keys to his empty flat to enjoy his rendezvous.

Rahul is also in love with Neha but has never confessed his feelings to her. Meanwhile Shikha too gets lonely with the constant absence of her husband and gets close to Akash(Shiney), a theater actor who is drawn to Shikha in spite of knowing that she is married. They bond well together and Shilpa finds a good friend in Akash which could lead to more. Shikha’s sisterShruti(Konkana Sen) works at a radio station, she is pretty, young but still lonely. She keeps hoping to meet the man of her dreams, an RJ Wishy. But instead she ends up meeting Debu(Irrfan Khan) that too through a matrimonial site. Shruti is not too happy about meeting Debu and makes this quite clear, but as time goes on she and Debu become good buddies and eventually more.

*Stats:

Direction:** All the stories are linked well and a common thread runs thorough them connecting them well. Director Basu has visualized an extremely realistic story that brings forth various emotions. The characters have been etched out well and all have been given realistic angles which include shades of grey. The screenplay is brisk and forthright establishing all the characters and their stories right at the onset. Basu’s execution is first-rate as he is able to make the audiences identify with several of his characters and their emotions. Basu makes strong use of emotions and drama but still manages to keep it realistic. He infuses a liberal dose of sharp wit.

Acting: Shilpa Shetty delivers a fine performance and oozes poise and dignity; she plays the lonely wife with ease. Konkana delivers a witty and brilliant performance that looks completely natural. Kangana Ranaut has a silent but strong role and conveys a lot through her eyes and silences. Kay Kay plays the male chauvinist like a complete professional and portrays his role convincingly. Irrfan Khan is funny, witty and delivers a neat performance. One gets to view a different side to Sharman Joshi and he is as good with emotions as he is with laughter. Shiney has a small role but still delivers a fine performance. Dharmendra and Nafisa Ali are average.

Positives: The editing is crisp and the film tries to depict a realistic slice of relationships within two hours. Several scenes stand out, Cinematography by Bobby Singh is worthy and the metro is depicted in a very realistic manner. Music by Pritam is good and suits the mood of the film. The Metro band is a different and interesting idea. Dialogues are witty and meaningful. Performances by all the actors are exemplary.

Negatives: However there are a few glitches like the climax of several stories could have been more realistic, the entire track of the elderly couple Dharmendra and Nafisa Ali seems unwanted even the couple’s getaway too looks a bit too filmy, Shilpa and Kay Kay’s track too has a very abrupt feel to it and even Kangana and Sharman’s story end is not very convincing. It seems Basu digresses from his realistic approach towards the end and instead pans to the audiences. Nonetheless the film is still worthwhile.

Overall^. The film caters more to the multiplex crowds and its story too is based on urban relationships, nonetheless a good emotional story, an interesting screenplay with ample drama and a brilliant execution definitely will have lots of takers. **In a word "VERY GOOD".
