Anurag Basu, Bollywood’s one of the highly talented director of Bollywood, gave a remarkable and an unforgettable movie Gangster. Now, he is back with Life in a…Metro, which is quite different from Gangster. Life in a…Metro is a good movie, but it would have been a very good movie if it had been devoid of unnecessary flaws and cons. More about it later.

The story of the movie: Rahul (Sharman Joshi) is a call center executive, who silently loved his colleague Neha (Kangana Ranaut). But Kangana had a sexual affair with her (and Rahul’s) boss Ranjeet (Kay Kay Menon). Ranjeet was married to Shikha (Shilpa Shetty) and there were a lot of problems between the two. Shikha, on the other hand, got attracted to a struggling theater actor Akash (Shiney Ahuja). Akash’s wife was fed up of his constant failures and had divorced him. Akash too, had started getting feelings for Shikha. Shikha’ sister and Neha’s roommate Shruti (Konkana Sen-Sharma) was 30 and a virgin, and was looking for a groom. She meets Monty (Irrfan Khan) through an online matrimonial website. However, Shruti didn’t liked Monty, but Monty felled in love with Shruti in first sight. Meanwhile, we have a kinda parallel story of Shikha’s aunt Vaijanti (Nafisa Ali), who used to live in an old age home and who meets his love, Amol (Dharmendra) after nearly 40 years.

Life in a…Metro has multiple tracks and therefore similar to movies like Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota, Salaam-E-Ishq etc. However, Life in a…Metro could have been much better than the above-mentioned movies.

The first half of Life in a…Metro is excellent. There is not a single dull moment and one does not get bored watching it. As the first half neared intermission, the movie gets to an all-time high. Even the beginning portions of the second half were quite likeable, however the movie dragged in this half and even the conclusions of some tracks were disappointing.

I would analyze each of the tracks:

Shiney-Shilpa-Kay Kay: The story was similar-husband having an extra-marital affair. But what made it interesting was that even the wife was seeing someone! The initial scenes of Shilpa and Shiney were very sweet. The love that blossomed between them was also nicely described. However, the ending of this track, for me, was completely unacceptable.

Kay Kay-Kangana-Sharman: This track was nicely executed and was very interesting. Sharman adjusting the dates for his seniors and friends and Kay Kay-Sharman’s conversations were the scenes, which were very interesting and enjoyable. However, the conclusion of this track looked very unreal and it seemed the director was in a hurry to finish the story.

Konkana-Irrfan: The best track. It was very enjoyable and even the ending was done in Bollywood ishtyle! Good one!

Dharmendra-Nafisa: In my opinion, there was no need for this track. It was a parallel story and the tragic ending of the track disappoints.

After giving bravura perfomance in Dus and Phir Milenge, Shilpa Shetty is back in form! She gives a fantastic performance and throughout the movie, she doesn’t disappoint even for a moment.

Shiney Ahuja as usual does a fine job, but unfortunately you don’t get much to see of this actor in the second half. Kay Kay Menon excels yet again. He does such a fine job that you can’t stop but praise him! Really, he is one of the best actors of this country.

Kangana Ranaut gives a smashing performance yet again! Though it is just her fourth movie, she maintains a steady performance and that too with highly talented actors. Sharman Joshi gives yet another excellent performance after Golmaal. He gets into the skin of his character and does a fantastic job. Great work, Sharman!

Konkana Sen-Sharma was outstanding. She was likeable throughout the movie. It seems she can do any type of role very easily. Fantastic! Irrfan Khan was natural throughout. One wants to see more of this talented actor!

Dharmendra was okay. Nafisa Ali does a goob job. Manoj Pahwa as Sharman’s neighbour was as usual great. Gautam Kapoor as the radio jockey was good. Others were okay.

Pritam’s music was simply superb. Pritam and his rock band features in all the songs of the movie and though it irritated at times, it was enjoyable. Songs were nice but the best among them was ‘In Dino’. It comes at the right situation.

Bobby Singh’s cinematography was great and the aerial scenes of Mumbai were great. Sanjib Datta’s dialogues were powerful and sharp. Raju Singh’s background score, like Gangster, was superb and haunting at times.

Anurag Basu does a mind-blowing job as director. Handling multiple stories is no easy but Anurag handles it easily. However, as a writer, disappoints a bit, normally because of the climax.

Some of the nice scenes of the movie:

  1. The first scene of the movie

  2. The scene where Irrfan and Konkana meet for the first time

  3. The scene where Shiney and Shilpa meet for the first time

  4. The scene where Sharman adjusts the dates for his room usage!

  5. The scene where Shiney and Shilpa travel in general compartment in local train (Is there any general compartment?)

  6. The argument of Kay Kay and Shilpa on their anniversary

  7. The intermission point

  8. The conversations of Kay Kay and Sharman

  9. The conversations of Irrfan and Konkana

10.The scene where Nafisa elopes with Dharmendra

11.The conclusion of Irrfan-Konkana track

On the whole, Life in a…Metro is a nice flick. It has some great performances, fantastic direction. However, the second half is the one, which disappoints big time. But though, the movie deserves to be watched!
