The 2009 hit American flick 500 Days of Summer has inspired multiple remakes and rehashed versions. Going through Meri Pyaari Bindu, one cannot help but find a lot f scenes that would take back to 500 Days of Summer. However, this time, the movie fails to connect to the audience's hearts.
Lets cut back to the story of the movie. Abhimanyu( Aayushmann Khurrana) and Bindu( Parineeti Chopra) meet as kids in Kolkata. Their childhood friendship eventually evolves into something of a serious one for Abhimanyu. He develops a crush on Bindu and follows her every move. However, soon Bindu moves to Australia and the two part ways.
Abhimanyu later becomes an erotica horror writer with books named Chudail ki Choli to his credit. With facing a major writer's block in his career and the publishers mounting pressure on him, he decides to pen a romantic novel named Meri Pyari Bindu. The movie then goes in flashback with Abhimanyu reminscing over his relationship with Bindu. Bindu wants to be a singer and following her passion, she leaves Abhimanyu. After meeting accidentally in Goa, whether Abhimanyu and Bindu finally fall in serious love, that is really the crux of the movie.
The main characters of Abhimanyu and Bindu are very superficial and even the conversations between them sound unnatural. Parineeti Chopra's character is literally a fashion model, as she keeps on changing clothes every few minutes into the movie. Much of the movie is focused on giving Parineeti's huge doses of makeovers.
The character of Abhimanyu is very unpredictable as well. He is unclear about his feelings for Bindu, whereas, Bindu sports a bohemian spirit.
The movie is pretty confusing, not in a positive manner. Every five or minutes or so, you will find a pop-up on screen, telling you whether the movie is in the year 05 or the ’90s or the present day. Much of the story is narrated through the ever-green classic songs of Rafi Saheb, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar, which is a new concept, but not executed properly. The first half is dominated by flashbacks, which completely befuddles as you as a viewer.
Overall, the movie literally becomes very predictable from the first half. Bindu friendzoning Abhimanyu reminds me of ADHM's Ranbeer and Anushka. Parineeti's acting still needs a lot of work and Aayushmann fails to impress in the movie.
Overall, a pretty average rom-com with decent music. You can give this movie a skip.
