Upon reading a few reports by our fellow reviewers, I went and got the CD for Meenaxi. And here are a few of my own comments about it:
Firstly, I am a great fan of A.R.Rahman, and am following his success for last 12 years. If a Hindi movie has his music, then I must have the CD for it. I have also collected the Tamil movie songs, just because they were touched by the Midas himself.
Thus, buying the Meenaxi CD was without any hesitation. Music is no wonder par excellence, as usual. However, there is something that really bothers me. Mr.Rahman’s reliance on synthesizers and electronic music is nowadays exceeding quite a lot. Also music overlay is very emphasized.
You may find the cut & paste places in the music, where the edition is quite obvious. Take the first song – Yeh Rishta. How come Reena Bharadwaj repeatedly sings last word ‘Hai’ exactly the same way? That too with a little voice modulation in the first ’Hai’. Readers, please listen to this song carefully. And the things will be quite obvious to you.
But, second song Chinnamma Chilakkamma is something out of heaven. Here the North really meets the South. There’s only one singer who really represents Punjab, and that is Sukhwinder Singh.
Dhuan Dhuan is nice, but percussion is too complex. It’s Shivmani’s after all. This song sometimes stumbles, or at least it feels so. Cyclist’s rhythm is something new.
Finally I would like to compliment Alka Yagnik on her ‘rang hai’ performance. I have heard only two songs by her for Mr.Rahman. One was from Shaheed Bhagat Singh – Maheewe, and this one – Rang Hai. She is really good, when she sings for Mr.Rahman. I would like to ask her, how she feels about these songs compared to ‘Ek Do Teen’ kind of songs.
Finally I would like to suggest this – Mr. Rahman, we can understand the difference between real instruments and the sythesised ones. Please, quality is not based on electronics, any given day. It may save you a few hours, and a few artists; but the overall quality of the music skydives. I will still remain a fan though, even if you keep on making the music as you are doing today.
