My 18 year old nephew, who belongs to TataNagaar and was about to join BTech at BIT-Mesra, complained his father that while driving scooter for flash of seconds everything become dark(absolutely no visibility). My cousin took him to eye-doctor who checked his eyes and gave clean-chit.

They then consulted couple of named neuro-doctors, who upon going thru his CT/MRI scans suggested for immediate surgery, as brain-tumour was detected. They also suggested to take him to Medanta-Gurgaon and referred Dr. Jha(Head-Neuroscience Dept).

After all these, on 10th Aug, my cousins family landed at Gurgaon and directly reached Medanta. Without any preliminary registration, they directly went to Dr. Jha’s cabin(very strong reference). In the meanwhile, regn was done by support staff.

Three of the main doctors immediately started analyzing the situation and conducted various tests on patient, and by evening advised a surgery, which was conducted on 11th Aug. Same time, they took some part of the tumor and did biopsy. Next day, patient was discharged with advice to take rest. Total cost of this treatment is approx. 2.5 Lakhs.

After couple of days, basis biopsy report, Doctor suggest to undergo another operation either immediately or even after 4-6 months with assurance that everything is ok. nothing much to worry. My brother and Sis-in-law after much deliberation thought that they should go through the second surgery also to make sure no threat to their sons life.

This is where the ordeal begins. After discussions with Doctor, they decided to have surgery on 01st-Sep-2014. Please note that they asked doctor for rough estimate which came out as around 3 Lakhs and  that doctor did not mentioned or warned of any major impact either health-wise or financially. Three main Doctors started the operation on 01st morning at around 9:00 and concluded at evening 5:00 pm(7 hours long surgery).

They then briefed the parents that they found another bigger size tumor after opening the skull and while operating, massive bleeding happened due to which they could not succeed in removing the tumor completely(around 80% removed), now the patient is on ventilator. Since then its 17 days, the patient is on ventilator. Per day ventilator cost is Rs. 60, 000/- only  Every other day, upon asking what is the situation, they give on or other reason for keeping him on ventilator. Mostly, he is getting fever and that’s why not able to shift out of ICU/Ventilator.

I will update this post with the progress but key points here are:-

  1. Wrong Estimates

  2. Wrong diagnosis

  3. No warning about the extended timelines

  4. No warning about huge financial expenses

  5. I will come back with updates, with the result of this ordeal - Have patience.

28th July: First of all, pls accept my humble apologies for not updating further.

In continuation to where I left:

The patient was in coma throughout the month of Sept'14 and somewhere by Oct end gained some sense. Our family routine was simple, daily morning go to hospital, wait wait wait for any news, watch kid in ICU for few mins in a day and keep praying God. And everyday the doctors were giving lots and lots of injections/medicines/using daipers etc etc at MRP or even higher price. Only positive that the kid was able to open his eyes and was trying to remember people with occasional smile. We all thanked Almighty that atleast his memory is coming back.

End Nov, he was moved out of ICCU into another ICU type-room where Docs allowed one family member(mother) to stay there beside her son and try to talk some or other thing. Note that she was not given any chair to sit, she used to stand there 10-12 hours daily until arnd 20Dec when he was shifted into a private room.

Since start of Dec, my bro decided not to make any further payment to the hospital. The billing section used to call him everyday to make payment else they will force discharge his son. But then we all collective made a decision NOT TO PAY ANYTHING FURTHER.

Also he used to buy reqd medicines from outside, at discounts even upto 50% of costs.

This continued for some weeks and my mid-Jan, with some more improvements doc advised for discharge. By that time, total pending dues were around 6+ lakhs. After arguments and arguments for the entire day, hospital was forced to waive off the entire due amount and provided us the discharge letter.

TOTAL AMOUNT WAIVED OFF WAS 6+ LAKHS.

-BE STRICT WITH STAFF AND DOCTORS.

-BUY MEDICINES FROM OUTSIDE AT DISCOUNTED PRICE.

-KEEP TRACK OF CHARGES FOR GLOVES/DAIPERS etc as they charge multiple times for same items every day.
