MAximum City:- Mumbai Alive . Review on Maximum City - Suketu Mehta

This is the first book of suketu mehta that I have read I don't know whether he has written any other book also, but this book I just picked up as I liked the cover lot. but when I read the book I was not disappointed.

This book tells us the story of mumbai the city of dreams the city of gold. It talks about mumbai from every aspect Suburbs , town side, Dance bars, underworld , Shiv Sena, mumbai riots, Vada Pav etc. The first chapter is is really good it talk about the authors child hood memories how his house the Dariya Mahal was then and how is it now. It is very funny and witty but I can say this only for the first chapter as rest all are very serious. The book deals with all that mumbai and the people of mumbai have gone through. It deals with various topics like the chwal people , what is their life , why do they live in spite of having their proper flats, how do so many live in a single room, It deal;s with up bahiya's, maharastrans, lower class muslim, guju's etc. It talks about a life of the dance bars girls, how do they make these men fall in love with them, why are they in this line,what all do they have to do to survive. It talks about the very famous Mumbai underworld what was the story behind dawood and chotta rajan split, what is the life of these shooters, how did underworld enter the film industry etc.The author goes deep into the underworld . It also talks about bolly wood , Sanjay Dutt, Vidu Vinod Chopra and Mahesh Bhatt. He talks about their lives their films but on a serious note, what pains they go through before making a film and what all they have to do to get their film realesed etc.What happened with sanay dutt when he was in jail.

There are other topics also like this rich Jain man who wants to leave everything and take sanyaas, there is this poet who wants to make it big. I feel these two topics could have been avoided but I feel these jains are such a big part of mumbai that he couldn't avoid them and of course mumbai is city of dreams and hopes so this topic cant be avoided either.

Bottom line read the book you amke like it you may not like but at least you will know the really picture of this city of dreams called "MUMBAI"
