History

Of volcanic origin and generally sheltered by barriers of coral reefs forming natural, safe, crystal clear lagoons, Mauritius has long been a dream destination. Known to the Arabs as early as the 10th century, but officially «discovered» in 1505 by the Portuguese navigator Pedro Mascarenhas, the island was occupied successively by the Dutch (1598-1712) and the French (1715-1810), and was ceded to Great Britain in 1814 through the Treaty of Paris. On 12 March 1968, Mauritius became Independent. Republic Day was proclaimed on 12 March 1992.

Language

most people in Mauritius are bilingual and are equally pat in English

and French. Creole and French are the main languages in the everyday environment and several oriental languages are also spoken.

Port Louis: Capital and main port of Mauritius, Port Louis was founded by the French governor, Mahe' de Labourdonnais, in 1735. The harbor lies sheltered in a semi-circle of mountains. The town has plenty of character, and shows in certain quarters signs of its past elegance.

Pamplemousses Gardens: The estate is known to naturalists throughout the globe for their outsized collection of original and unusual plants, including the giant Victoria regia *water lilies and countless species of palm trees. There is a picky attention is the talipot palm, which flowers once every sixty years.

Leisure:

The water sports offered here are from private organizations; comparatively the prices are a little higher... But these are once in life time experience... So don’t keep a lock on your pockets.

One of the most stunning ways to discover the ocean beds is to go on board the Blue Safari submarine. You will enjoy an improbable encounter with the marine life and get an amazing chance to see various wrecks dating back to the century. Night diving, «honeymoon» diving and training sessions are obtainable of course you need plan for such activities, well in advance!

The Mauritian sea never fails to surprise: multi-colored fish, moray eels, magnificent coral beds.

Skin-diving masks, flippers and scuba diving equipment ... enjoy one of the happiest experiences in the world! Whether you are in a diving suit or in a submarine, Mauritius can introduce you to the secrets of its submarine world.

The blue Safari is a unique submarine in the Indian Ocean, can make your dream come true, doubled with unforgettable experience. The safari will last one hour with a seating capacity of 5 to 10 passengers and the pilot, seated in A/C, fully transparent glassed cabin at atmospheric pressure. At the sight of ever changing colors of the corals and ship wrecks sights are astonishingly unbelievable diving by night is also possible. Become a fish in the silent symphony, performing a memorable ballet would be a unique experience.

*My tour:

*We had the tour organized by Thomas Cook! They take the complete ownership on your tour. Starting from hotel booking to the site seeing and additional water activities/scenic visits. Mauritius is an ideal destination for honeymoon.

You will find good scenic beauties, beaches, cliffs, commercial malls and above all stay away from the present world without your laptop and cell phone.

We stayed in Le Suffren Hotel & Marina. Though this hotel is for business visits – Its quite convenient and near to the city stretch.

Go to below link too see the hotel: https://lesuffrenhotel.com/

You’ll find a lot of people talking in French in Mauritius – But don’t worry we can survive speaking Hindi and English as most of them do understand Hindi here.

Food should be an issue for anyone as we have multi cuisine in every neek and corner of city. Non-Vegies would have a wide variety of choices… Seafood is the best choice.

I was told that the island of Mauritius is of volcanic origin. Which is entirely a low-lying plain in the north, Infact the island raises to a plateau that covers the central part. If you see the south it is completely covered with huge cliffs, rising to a maximum elevation in Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire (828 m). Several lakes are located in the plateau region, and numerous streams rise in the highlands and spread out to the coast. The island is almost wholly surrounded by coral reefs, but Port Louis, the capital, has a fine harbor, accessible to ships.

It was a 6 days and 7 nights tour which includes visits to Museum, Malls, Trou aux cerfs Crater which is located in Curepipe is a spectacular place to visit. And of course The Island is surrounded by beaches. It doesn’t matter to which part of the island you go: white sandy beaches everywhere.

Ganga Talao - Grand Basin beyond La Marie and Mare-aux-Vacoas is found one of the two natural lakes of Mauritius. There is a huge statue of Lord Shiva standing is a spectacular piece of Indian sculptures or say Indian art.

Truly one would find magnificent places in this small piece of land floating on mighty Indian Ocean.

We visited Mauritius in the month of February and we had glimpse of rain almost everyday. But it is a lovely experience to get wet under that bright sun with a Desi Beer (Phoenix)

A twisting road leads from Case Noyale village to the colored earths at Chamarel. This is a heap of rolling land stretching in divergent layers of color, and the patches of blue, green, red and yellow earth are believed to be the result of weathering. The nearby Chamarel waterfall come into view from the moors and prehistoric vegetation and is startlingly beautiful. Do not miss the tortoise park here.. They are huge and energetic !!

We enjoyed watching a movie in a small multiplex theater in port lousi where Indian Cinema dominates.

Playing in Casino is the weekend activity for most of the Gamblers in city.

Bottled water is available all over the city.

Moreover we have found two best couples in our tour in Mauritius who made the tour even more lively and happening. We wouldn’t have enjoyed the stay so much without Mr & Mrs Mahendra and Mr & Mrs Pradeep.

It was just a week we spent together.. Where we have earned a life time friendship!

Thanks to Thomas Cook and Mauritius.!!!!!!!!!

Happy journey readers!

Regards

Abhishek & Usha !
