Hi. My wife & I went to Mauritius for a romantic getaway. We were there for a week in the beginning of September 2006. Mauritius is a beautiful island with lovely seaside scenery. However, before you plan a trip, I would like to suggest the following pointers:

Go there if BOTH of you love sea sports, seafood & relaxation. Saw many couples who do not get into the water, or care to drink or read a book by the sea..... If that is the case then you will get bored. Most of the daytime activity is centered around the resort you put up in. They have all sorts of free activities like water skiing, snorkelling, glass bottom boats, kayaking, paddle boating etc..... Take advantage of the same. We did loads of snorkelling & water skiing. Mauritius has some of the best coral habitat in the world you all must go snorkelling wherever you can. We arranged a day long trip on a catamaran, which included breakfast (french style i.e. bread & jams), dolphin searching (not neccessarity watching), snorkelling, beach drop off, lunch (Lobsters) etc. It was a great way to spend the day, & I recommend it if you love jumping into the water & seafood. A day trip to the Ile de Surf is also a great idea coz you get to see some of the most beautiful beaches in the world!!!

Nightlife is interesting but not awesome....... Everything is centered around Grand Bay, so, if you are a partying couple, try to book a resort in the north west part of the island. Banana Bar is a popular tourist hangout & is worth a visit. Star Dance is the main clubbing place for locals. I suggest you go to both on weekends only. Star Dance is interesting coz you'll see people dancing to Bhojpuri songs with African beat remixes, the crowd is totally global, with racial profiles from Africa, India, Europe, & Arabia. The music also bounces effortlessly through all these different influences. I recommend it if you would like to see a microcosm of young Mauritian diversity. The club is a bit rough, but worth it.

Cuisine is awesome, from Indian, to French Creole, & some amazing seafood places. Go for the South African wines coz they are great & cheaper than european ones. Must have at least 2 romantic dinners on the seaside. Restaurants in the resorts itself are great but book in advance.

Ladies love the shopping coz you factory outlets of many designer brands.

Hope you enjoy Mauritius. It is really beautiful.
