Well, after standing in one hour and having booked two days back, this was the moment of truth! I knew I had to be there and I knew I was meant to watch this movie, no matter what the reviews were. I believed that the Matrix ended in the first part itself, and the extensions to the movie were just a way of caching in the popularity. Reviews have already blasted the movie to pieces for its lack of story-line or anything. What I didn’t understand was – it’s a sequel to a movie which ended! Did u expect a story? I had come out of Matrix, but did I get reloaded into it? Read on!
----------THE MATRIX----------
The Matrix was a wonderful combination of science fiction, philosophy and great special effects. Humans exist in a virtual world which the machines have taken over. The machines have created a computer simulated program in which humans believe they exist. However in reality, they are being used by machines for their own survival by using humans to generate electricity. However, the creator of the matrix left some free and those who are free now fight the war against the machines. The machines are trying to capture the one last human colony on earth – Zion. Morpheus, Trinity and the gang are trying to find ‘the One’ who will fight the very matrix. Neo happens to be the one Morpheus is searching for. The Matrix ends brilliantly with Neo finally coming to understand that he is the One and he is the One to save the real humans and free them.
----------MATRIX RELOADED----------
Matrix Reloaded continues six months hence the first part. The essential Trinity of Neo, Trinity and Morpheus have now been able to free many more minds than before. However, Neo knowing he is the One, still is trying to understand the purpose in his actions. In a predicament, the people of Zion realize they have less than 36 hours to save themselves from a strong army of 250000 sentient machines. The Oracle has again come upon a prophecy of making a choice for Neo. However the choice has been made for him. Neo has to find the key to the source of the Matrix, thereby which he will know the real truth. The essential trilogy with other new characters now go in search of the key to the source of the Matrix.
For everything else please watch the movie – I did rather not spoil the fun.
----------SCREENPLAY RELOADED----------
To be very honest, the screenplay of the movie isn’t really that good. Its only after a very sloppy first half hour that things start to proceed. Unlike the first part where the philosophy was the essential to understanding the Matrix, the philosophy for most parts in the movie is pretty forced upon. Saying that don’t misunderstand me! The final cut of the philosophy is simply mind-blowing to the essence of the Matrix. I am still trying to figure out the final cut of the movie and what holds next! One thing is for sure – there will nothing be as the Matrix revolutions is mediocre movie. It will either be too good or pathetically hopeless.
----------SPECIAL EFFECTS RELOADED----------
One of the things which made the Matrix a cult classic was its special effects. Matrix first introduced the concept of Bullet-Time where a sequence was slowed down to such an extent that you could almost see every frame happening. Then by extrapolating on other sequences shot by other cameras a truly homogenous shot would be made possible. The amount of processing power to generate such visualization is simply enormous.
The sequences in Matrix Reloaded are indeed reloaded from the Matrix, except that everything is a factor of 10. Few of the amazing sequences are Neo fighting with hundreds of Agent Smiths, the disappearing Brothers trick, and the much too elongated chase sequence. The final cut to the chase sequence is unbelievable – simply, it will not be repeated in any movie for years. It’s a Bullet-Time shot extrapolated with so many other sequences that the only way to understand it is to see it on screen!
----------DIRECTION AND ACTING RELOADED----------
Frankly there was nothing to act in this movie which was all style. However all actors manage a decent job. The Wachowski Brother’s idea to carry off on a movie which ended seems to pay of well after the initial half hour. However it’s the final elusive cut which makes the premise for the next one to be dead as a dodo or inherently very interesting! The story for most parts lack coherence and it would be interesting to see how everything jells up in the in third installment of the trilogy.
----------MATRIX REVOLUTIONS----------
Matrix Revolutions is the third in the trilogy of the Matrix series. Neo has made the essential choice and he is going to face it. There is a certain amount of confusion in the story at this point and Matrix Reloaded promptly ends where you start getting into circles all over again. Hopefully Matrix Revolutions should resolve any more Matrix of complexity which it has woven. For a sneak preview wait till all credits get over to see what Revolutions has to offer.
Otherwise – get Reloaded again and again till you get it!
