This refers to my recent trip(April 2009) to this god forsaken place called Matheran.
I had the misfortune of booking at Hotel Hill View Resort after being fooled by their site on internet .
Frankly this resort is meant for monkeys & not for humans. Guests are an entertainment for the monkeys over here . The resort boasts of swimming pool, which is like a large bathtub, you can maybe wet your feet in that if the monkeys permit, the TT table is all worn out, most of the time there is no power & the staff is always reluctant to start the generator right away, you cannot sit out because of monkey menace & insects which love to bite the hell out of you . You cannot enjoy TV or cable since there is no power, there are no geysers in bathroom & you can only get hot water by buckets from the staff .No refrigerators means no cold drinks, no curd!
The Hillstation itself has become a hell spot with locals determined to fleece you for small services . There are no proper laid out roads(you are most welcome to twist your ankles since the roads are uneven), you have to enjoy the smell of horse DUNG everywhere, since no refrigerated vans are allowed to come from Neral you cannot get good branded stuff like curd, milk etc over here. You are forced to buy the local stuff which is "yukk" quality .Water is a luxury item .
While walking on the so called roads you have to continuously lookout for the monkeys who dont lose any opportunity to harrass you . There are no street lights(except near the Railway station & market) . So if you dare to venture even late evening(say 7 PM) you are at risk of getting hurt or losing your way .
To sum it off I would say, you can visit Matheran if you want to know what the meaning of torture is .
The locals have banned any development in this once beautiful hill station & made it a Hell Station .
