I have been to Matheranmore number of times than I care to keep track of. It is a nice place to unwind specially during weekdays (not weekends). Now you are probably thinking which crank would go during weekdays. Well, if you prefer the crowd then weekends, if you prefer the peace and quite than weekdays.

Going during week days also has the added advantage of cheaper room rates irrespective of class of accommodation.

If you are one of the quite thinking types, Matheran is a great place for you. You can walk, take in the fresh breeze and do some quite thinking, spend time with yourself (or with someone else)

Pollution: If according to you only vehicle exhaust = pollution than Matheran is pollution free. Matheran suffers from severe dust pollution. People with astama should keep away. Dust pollution is another reason why I prefer the weekdays - fewer people = fewer galloping horses = less dust.

I wish the Matheran council would pave all the routes there. It would definately reduce the dust and reduce the chances of people suffering from twisted ankles. (specially elderly). If going for a walk in the evening don't forget to carry a torch. Also, unless you are staying in a good hotel where there usually is some entertainment arranged (weekends), carry some good books or games like chess / cards with you.

One strange thing you might notice: Lots of trees but very few birds. Know why? See if any of the trees have fruits on them.....
