Introduced in our country in 1993, the Zen ('Alto' as it was known to the world market eons back) is now15 years old . The jelly bean contours still look contemporary, but alas, the ride, the thin body shell, and lower crash-worthiness betray its age.
The engine is still beautifully Japanese, with a turbine like smoothness in the high rev range, and the car is absolute fun to throw around corners. The low-end torque however, disappoints, and with five people, its tough to climb steep slopes at decent speeds with the A/C running. Compared to the Santro or even Palio/Indica, its tough getting into the low rear seats (3 in the rear is a crowd). The fuel efficiency is adequate - I get 10-13 kmph with the A/C switched on in the city.
The build quality is an absolute delight. no squeaks or rattles even after years of hard usage. excellent reliability with no significant problems to speak of. However, the crashworthiness ratings of the car is significantly less than more modern cars like the Palio/Sail/Indica which are significantly heavier and employ thicker sheet metal steel.
I must say though, that the solidity of the ride in the Palio/Indica range, their better safety ratings, suspension, ride-height and spaciousness is something the Zen cannot hope to match without significant reengineering.
Personally, much as I hate to say this, I prefer the Zen retiring in graceful style soon. Perhaps the Esteem's engine can be fitted in and a two door 'sports' model in bright colours could postpone the inevitable end. It has served us gracefullly all these years. Amen.
