When I returned as an NRI after 30 yrs in 2002 I bought a WagonR and was laughed at by many resident Indians, but aha..the wagon R proved to be the most successful growth in sales for many yrs thereafter.
Its the same with the Versa, if u look at foreign markets , a mini van is a highly sought after purchase for practical families and I am sure with time other Indians will realise this.
I ve had the Versa for 3 1/2 yrs now. No complaints what so ever. Plenty space inside, same space taken as Wagon R and other crammed small cars. The AC is superb. Handling just like a small car. Trunk space- u ll get lost in it. I packed 8 large suitcases in it once from airport. pick up. Engine is so reliable and quiet. Sitting position- high and strong on the road.
Advice- must have additional side rails for the high step up ( 2,000) and a rear mirror attached to the trunk door (200). A front grill guard and rear bumper guard is also a good aggressive and moveout of my way signal (3,500). A rear spoiler does much for the looks.
A few improvements areas - the rear seats in the 5 seater version which I have should be pushed back atleast 6-8 inches for better leg room for the rear passengers. This can also be custom done. This makes a big difference. !!!!
All is all. A very practical reliable sensible buy with all the practical needs met without the high prices of other foreign branded cars. Obviously you cant show of this car but deep inside you know and cant rest assured u have made a smart p[urchase choice.
Front end tyres wear out fast. Also recommend widening the wheel base with spacers..dont seem to do that here in India, but 1 inches spacers on 4 wheel mounts would do a very good service to the turning stability and broaden the look of the otherwise narrow and high look of the van.
