Maruti Swift - 3 months of ownership!!. Review on Maruti Suzuki Swift

Hi pals! This is my second review on Swift! Now since I have owned and driven this car for 3 months now, I can give you a better picture.

At first I would like to know that why have people created such a fuss about this car having an esteem engine!! The same people, in the “esteem” section of the mouthshut say that this is the best engine around! It is the quickest! It has better pickup than Optra! Bla-bla-bla……Esteem’s engine has always been known for its performance.

I know critics will debate upon this saying that swift is 150 kgs heavier, so it is too low on pickup and mileage. This is totally wrong! Going by this theory, if you seat two adults of 75 kg each in an esteem, it will probably die of pickup and average. WRONG!! All of us know that esteem remains as powerful even if you seat 4 adults. Moreover, continuous up-gradation of engines is always followed in every car…. So you can’t point out this engine as a phased out one.

I agree that swift may not be as punchy as an esteem, pickup wise. But for some technically sound people, I would like to clarify the same. The Swift, in fact has tall gear ratios as compared to esteem. This means that you can rev the car hard to limits in practically any gear. The swift can reach 110 kmph in second gear and 140 kmph in third! Your tachometer will still not touch the ‘red mark’. In an Esteem the same figures are 80 and 100 kmph respectively. And the theory in automobiles says that cars with lower gear ratios always have faster pickup. That’s why racing cars like Formula 1 always have low ratios and have 6-8 gears.

Boldly speaking, good points about swift are superb brakes, feather touch steering wheel, nice gears, cinema hall like dimming interior lights and a Mercedes like display panel. It glows oringish rather than boring greenish in all the cars. Bad points are- ugly sounding horn, premier padmini types! Thin looking tyres in Lxi and Vxi.

Overall the built quality is robust than Indica or even Palio. Boot might look small, but it is very deep. Can carry loads of luggage.

Lastly, I would like to point out a problem which only swift owners can clarify. The exhaust note of my car is too heavy. Sometimes I get a feel as if my silencer is leaking somewhere. But that can’t be the case as my car has done only 3000 km and the silencer has never been damaged… Please help me out.

Lastly, the moral of the story is that is a good car with a very good engine. It is very stable at high speeds. Is very solidly built and can hence protect you better in case of a mishap. Vxi has loads of features and is the largest selling model.
