Review : Her face is as round as moon itself or the towers touch the sky may be an exageration (ignore spells for me,spell check not available in MS) thats it ,even for the official description of a gypsy 12 to 13kmpl of petrol (mind it) in city , believe me if it is 6 months old if it gives 8 your are lucky enough. But how does People (middle class or scoter class) offer an gypsy . well it is simple , buy an out dated gypsy (who knows it is 2000 model or 86 model all seems same except two or three plastic covers here and there ),(come closer I need to tell you something.....;;;;hush ...; MUL never has a design office in india all this days and they just say indians dont need design cars if they need they will go in for the honda or another ) and where were we yeh gypsy old one gonna to modify it ,give it a clothes change ,a bypass surgery with a new heart .
well how's that possible.
Just simple ,our buddy gypsy can take any engine .Many diesel engines like ambasidor1800 ,toyota 1.8;dihatsu ,Bmc and many but dont try to put a m&m or a trax they are too heavy for our beauty . now here we go how to make it all . buy a damn bad condition gypsy say at 20000 to 40000 not more than that and pull the engine out and sell it , you get 2000 for gypsy engine any model ,now buy a 1000 cc engine second hand if you want to go for petrol one or if you need a diesel one there is wide choice depending on the walet , a toyota sealed engine as they call it (means a new one, god knows if it is really new , I believe they are those used on ships and then thrown to india)may be around 60K can get it at 45 if known contacts in docks , daihatsu new at 35k -40K.and now come our scooter range one the old ambasidor engine bored and is now in condition to be lifted into the gypsy just 22k , just a few modifications it goes well , howbout transmission is a question welll again the ambi one can be cut short and put in place for gypsy . what next if our is a really old gypsy and needs a paint change well another 14 k , I dont generaly go in for cheap brands of paints as first old age marks of a car or jeep are its paint. and I hate it . well took a lot time in chosing the paint finaly it was dark green metalic with a cremish white for the hard top just for the front two seats , need a flamy look , painted the michelin tyres white just the name micelin to high light it ,need no ballon tyres as the ones that gypsy gets are quite good . streering, I some how hate the plastic looking steering of the gypsy seems like a conistable holding a wheel as gypsy gets a too big steering than necesary . , so changed for a wooden one sporty as they call .A small one just the size of a tea saucer .got it for 1400rs bargain man bargain thats what has to be done when you want to make a gypsy at the cost of an auto . There I go The mechanic says the wiring is no good , I wonder why the hell he needs wiring I just need one set of lights but the damn short mecanic insists on new wiring , then I realise the cost and waiting for spareparts , the showroom fellow thaught I was his regular coustomer(gace a cola every time I go) , though he made me come 4 times to his showroom for one wiring set 5000rs god that was really a costly spare.but was told that the set had to be flown from bombay to bangalore through jet airways (ops all for me and my lady who was still wearing justs bras know what she was getting lapam a rough paint to support the costly paint), and had anotehr set of leaf springs at the front , but back I needed it to be as it was because toomany leaf springs make it a tough and rough drive in bumps , haaa and this that the mecanic made me run another 10 thousand , 5600 for the mecanic and those team , leaving the couple of hundreds for there tea cofee bills all this one and half month . now what to do with that ambi engine sound........ every riksha walla knows it , well here came my tuning car knowledge to Help , found out the oldest spare parts shop in the city and asked him for a mufler of standard 2000(rem this india's first luxary car gives 2KMPL, also called as rover wald in europe) it goes well with rover montegosilencer and can even make a lorry engine just hiss , and at highways or in two lane roads you get the batteling sound of a indy race car , as the montegos speciality . well finaly I put a flag post a brass one but was told not allowed to put an indian flag , ops then why the hell did I buy this brass one for 400rs to dry my underpants ........; ok left it just like that . now I start driving the roads , well doesnt really go above 85 kmph but was good the sound in lane roads was as if I was gooing 0 to 60 in two secs , streering was good as never touched the steer mechanish for fear of my mechanic will make it even an ambi steer , but was good none knows I have a ambi heart but all those friends were really sad as they could not go beyond the 800cc ,but the fact was this gypsy was cheaper than an 800. now comes the difficulties , go to a daba or a high way tea stall in your soft top gypsy with a brass flag post , see people running or giving you a strange glance ,(they think gypsy's of this sought are only for police or forest )then the first coupula months the rear vibration , have to do some modification with rear suspension , then the drive alteration , rem noo four wheel drive now , but millage is abouve 13 in city . but my experience was that if you drive a sumo or a truck it is the same , but for the gypsy it is something more not a truck not a car suits well for people who likes to leave there bikes and jump to 4Ws , do what ever alteration it accepts and its your jeep and your taste .
Pros : gypsy 86 looks like gypsy 2000 no change
Cons: must know a bit of mechanism to unexpected failures
