I bought my Maruti Esteem Vxi about 4 months back. Pros: Big boot space, Big passenger space, good interiors and seats, comes with Kenwood sound system and fog lights.. It's priced just between a small car and high end ... Low maintenance. I bought the car for the package...excellent service, low cost parts... Thats the best part. Cons:
The gear shifting is not too smooth. I knew from the test drive. Hydraulic steering (not electronic), but can't tell too much difference. It has become better after 5000kms..but no mechanical problems. I haven't tried a long drive > 50kms yet. Older style panels and switches. I felt the lights are not too powerful, old style reflectors probably. Not sure how the performance will be 5 years down the line. It may not be that driver friendly but passengers do get a pretty good ride.
I exchanged my 3 year old Alto for a great price, with exchange bonus, corporate discount etc. If you have an old maruti vehicle, this exchange could be a steal.
