I've driven a Maruti 800 from 1999 onwards, except for a year in between when I switched to the Santro. November 2003 was when I decided that I had to change cars. My 800 was 10 years old and needed some serious repairs to be done. I was comfortable with Maruti and thought I would now buy an Alto. I visited the Maruti dealer to explore the Zen, WagonR and Alto. The dealer was very biased towards the Zen but the price was way above my budget.

I finally decided I was going to buy the Alto. However, during the final moments of the decision making process the following thoughts occurred to me:

  1. The Alto had the same engine as the 800

  2. It was almost similar to the 800 except for the body.

  3. One of the representatives at the dealership told me that , after a couple fo years when I would want to sell my car the Alto would fetch a lower price that the 800 bought at the same time.

  4. I would be spending about Rs.70000/- more for better looks.

5.The Alto comes with power steering - however, how necessary is a power steering for a small car? Most 800 drivers would agree with me that steering is not a huge hassle. Therefore I decided to buy the 800 once again. I'm quite happy with it.

It serves my purpose though it may not have the snob value that most other cars do. It is still the cheapest car to buy and maintain. Great mileage! I guess most people who want to buy an Alto would consider what the Alto has to offer more than the good old 800 and at what price.
