Maruti 800 is one of the best cars on Indian Roads. When it was first launched in 1984 on Indian Roads there were only two major players: Fiat and Ambassador. Hindustan Motors had launched Contessa and Fiat had launched 118NE but in different segments.
In the basic segment Maruti was the first good car.
Till today, after the launch of many cars, we get our moneys worth only with a maruti 800. For the price it is the best car available.
Because of the time it has been on the roads now, getting it repaired is also very easy and most of the car mechanics in the country can repair it. It is miles ahead of its rivals fiat and ambassador. That is why it is cornering the maximum portion in the market. The resale price of a maruti 800 is also the highest amongst cars.
After using a fiat for ten years I purchased a second hand Maruti 800. I was contemplating on a new Zen, but because of other financial priorities I decided on second hand car. And in second hand there was only one choice that was Maruti-800.
I purchased a 1990 model with an A.C.
The earlier owner had not kept the A.C. in working condition so I got it repaired. I had purchased the car with a clear understanding that there may be work in the engine and the body was rusted. I got the engine done for Rs 5000.00 which was cheap as compared to fiat which would have cost me 12000.00. Repairing, denting and colouring the body is the costliest in any car and they would all cost the same.
After I had done the engine up the car is performing absolutely well and there are no repairs. Though it is pretty old now, it does not stop in the road and I am very satisfied with the performance. Driving it is very easy compared to fiat or Amby. Very economical too. On Mumbai roads I get 11.5 KMPL without AC. Outside Mumbai, on long runs it gives 15 - 16 KMPL. It takes 100 Kmph easily even after being so old, which my fiat would take but with difficulty.
