UthHeaven Movie Review - Manmadhan

Manmadhan - Little Superstar Simbhu's dream project! He takes the honors for story, screenplay and additional directorial inputs. Yuvan Shankar's music is ruling the charts since the audio release. We have ace camera man R.D.Rajasekhar, talented editor Antony and some more leading technicians in this movie. Produced by Krishnakanth for Indian Theatre Productions, this movie is touted as the next best thriller in the mold of Kamal Hasan - Bharathi Raja classic Sigappu Rojakkal. Does the movie fulfill all the hype generated so far? Read on.

The movie's plot is really simple but we ain't gonna reveal that easily! It has about Madhan and how he becomes Manmadhan and why he becomes so. Simbhu is Madhan, an accountant and a music college student. Jyothika plays the role of a college-going girl and gets a stunning opening scene. Watch out for it!!! After some initial mixups Jyothika falls for Simbhu.

This is where the movie gets interesting and in spite of some unwanted fight sequences, we get to know about the various tricks of Manmadhan. Meanwhile the police are already left clueless about the sudden disappearance of many young girls in the city. Later on, they come to know that Manmadhan is behind all this and this was possible due to Jyothika's tip but what happens when they capture Manmadhan forms the rest of this stylishly crafted thriller.

Now more interesting spoilers about this movie! We have Mandira Bedi in a guest role but she is used more for one sexy sequence with Simbhu which has been heavily inspired from Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut. There are also other scenes which have been inspired from 'Valentine'.

We have Goundamani making a comeback but he fails to make an huge impact except for the scene where he lifts the iron box instead of the telephone receiver! Yana Gupta appears in a song sequence and she is supported(!) by many other young models who provide very liberal skin show throughout the movie. Atul Kulkarni is the assistant commissioner hunting for Manmadhan and we have Sathyan as his side kick. We never know why Atul is in this petty role after his impressive performance in Lingusamy's Run. The comments made by Sathyan makes Atul's role sound much more worse.

Sindhu Tholani has a very spicy guest role and she has done her best to this important character who is responsible for the change in the personality traits of Simbhu. Sagalai Ragalai's Santhanam entertains the audience with his imitations of N.T.R. and Junior N.T.R in the ragging scene. Even though his screen presence is just for a couple of minutes he makes it memorable by his unique dialogue delivery style. And now to the biggest spoiler of all - Simbhu plays a dual role as Madhan and his younger brother 'Mottai'!!

First of all, a big applause to Simbhu for delivering an excellent performance. This can strongly be said as his best one till date in the acting department and his screenplay and story writing skills are worth mentioning too! He excels in the dual role as Madhan and 'Mottai'. He looks stylish during the songs with his fast paced dance moves and the costumes.

We can understand that he has worked real hard for the movie and this can clearly be taken as one of the major reasons for the success of the movie in the box office. Jyothika looks more gorgeous than usual and has done her role well while Mandira Bedi, Yana Gupta have been used according to the script.

Simbhu needs to be applauded for the gripping script which lags a bit during the first half but picks up in the second half. Thanks to some interesting twists and the biggest of them forms the climax!! Screenplay is a major plus with all those right twists at regular intervals.

Cameraman R.D.Rajasekhar and editor Antony steal the show with their slick camera angles and crisp editing respectively. Yuvan Shankar Raja has taken care of the music department. All the songs look good on screen even though the remix 'En Aasai Mythileye' and the melodies 'Manmadhane' and 'Kadhal Valathaen' are the pick of the lot. He does shine in the background score too especially in the second half! The theme music of 'Manmadhan' in the BGM is excellent and whenever Simbhu stares at the camera, Yuvan's score helps building the tension.

Balakumaran's dialogues are a major plus to the movie. Director A.J. Muruhan has done his part in extracting some great performances but he along with Simbhu should have concentrated more on song picturisation, which gets jaded a bit with almost the same kind of sets. Kudos to the choreographers for making Simbhu and Jothika rock the theatre with their dance movements in the remix song!

The movie's plot makes way for the skin show and we are treated to a larger extent in the songs. This factor may keep the family audience away but nothing too extravagant. A fight sequence gets included unnecessarily into the script and Kanal Kannan needs to rethink all those high flying techniques which have been providing comic relief to the audience in his recent movies.

They are just too much and defy logic at most places. Speaking of logic, we do to get to see some real loose ends in the script but they go unnoticed thanks to the performances. Indeed Manmadhan lives up to the hype generated but that's mainly due to a brilliant second half!

APPLAUSE : Simbhu and Technicians

AHEM! : Fight sequence and Simbhu's usual one liners!

VERDICT : Silambarasan's stylish follow up to Sigappu Rojakkal!
