Staff Attitude:

My mother is suffering from myesthenia gravis, a neurological disease. She underwent a surgery of thymus gland and was okay for a few weeks. After few days she complained of difficulty to breathe out, and we decided to take her to the doctor. We did not take her to old doctor, Dr Agadi, who was really money minded and had insisted that we get the surgery done at Manipal Hospital from a doctor he knows, which would have cost us 4 lacs, when everything was done at BIO for as less as 1.5 lacs.

Since Mallya is a good hospital, we decided we'll go for a neurologist at Mallya and took an appointment with Dr.P.C Mohan. We have doctors in our family and believe only in English medicine and respect doctors a lot. Somehow, the behaviour of Dr.P.C Mohan was not satisfying. During the 2 consultations we had with him, within a span of 2 weeks, my Mom always complained of the same problem of being unable to breathe out and during both the consultations, he was hung on to his cell phone for half the time having loud conversations.

My sister being a doctor accompanied us for both the consultations and explained in medical terms, my Mom's condition and the doctor went through all the previous reports as well. But, he was of the opinion that my Mom was perfectly alright and her problem was just a pyschological thing. We blindly accepted his diagnosis, going by the hospitals and the doctors credentials.

The second time we visited him, he got us convinced again that there was no need for him to do any tests or prescribe any other medicines, even though we offered to get any test in the world done. He was so adamant about his diagnosis that he even thrust upon us to consult a psychiatrist at Mallya hospital. We met the psychiatrist who advised that my Mom was under depression and we must put her on anti-depressants for a week. Again, we blindly took the doctors suggestion.

A week later my Mom fell unconcious and was hospitalized. She had gone into semi-coma for 3 days and spent 25 days in the ICU and more than a month at the hospital. It seems the Carbon di oxide content in her blood was a 100 times the normal levels. We realised that what she had complained of being unable to breathe out was infact correct. All that needs to be done to find out was simple test called Arterial Blood Gas(ABG), which cost a mere 200 bucks. We ended up spending close to 3 lacs for her month long stay in the hospital.

All our respect of Dr.P.C.Mohan instantly turned into anger. He is entirely responsible for the trauma my mother and our family underwent and still undergoes, because I believe if he was not negligent during the period after the surgery, which was a critical time, my Mother would have been cured of the disease, which she still suffers from. The more we think about it, our anger becomes more, we start thinking of little things like the way he hung on to his phone during consultations. We feel absolutely depressed about having taken Dr.P.C.Mohan's advise and making my Mom to take anti-depressants and about having told her that everything was fine as the doc said, its just about what she was thinking.

Luckily, we have a good insurance which spared us of all the financial burden. More than the money, the trauma we went through was un-bearable. Dr.P.C.Mohan is responsible for all of that. He is an irresponsible and negligent doctor.
