Mahaswetha is a novel by Mrs Sudha Murthy depicting the life a girl, Anupama, Who gets wedded to a dotor, Anand, with lots of hopes and dreams. She finds out a white patch on her skin which turns out to be leukoderma a skin disease which is popularly known as vitiligo.
Her in-laws force her out of the house and she reaches her parent's home back at her village where more or less similar situations await her. She tries to commit suicide but finally gives upon the idea and accepts the truth and moves along with it.
She reaches Mumbai where she builds her career as a lecturer and happens to meet a person, Dr. Vasanth, who asks her hand in marriage. Anupama rejects the proposal but continues her friendship with him.
The book is all about how women are still ill treated in India for no fault of theirs and how a courageous woman stands up and builds her life realizing her beauty lies in her strength but not in the skin colour. Good book.
