The film MAHARATHI follows a stage narrative; few characters, a problem and many solution seekers.
A rich but now-not-so well known film producer Jaysingh Adenwalla (Naseeruddin Shah) is living a miserable life, reason? His young and greedy wife (Neha Dhupia) is all eys for his money (and death); his career is already in a dilapidated state and ditto for his health because of his excessive drinking. With the turn of events and sheer miracle a stranger enters their life (and saves Jaysingh’s life in a road accident)
Subash (Paresh Rawal) is a simple man who sticks to his work and words. Mr. Merchant (Boman Irani), wise and whimsical in his actions is the family lawyer and also a close aide to Jaysingh.
Jaysingh commits suicide under shady circumstances. So to claim the insurance money Mallika (Neha Dhupia) and Subash plot a plan and keep getting in all the odd corners (Watch the real adventure on screen.)
All this seems very usual to any murder mystery; but the difference is the subtly embedded faces that Paresh Rawal portrays with great ease and simplicity. Each moment has a different colour to show and adds on to the drama.
Director Shivam Nair brought out the best out of all the lead actors. But veterans like Boman Irani and Om Puri seems wasted in small and inconsequential roles, moreover because their entry raised the expectation bar higher. Neha Dhupia and Tara Sharma perform their short parts neatly (obviously in comparison to their previous acts!) The set was small and revolved around the big bungalow where the Adenwallas reside, but that just added to the reality and supported the film duration.
In all, the film has a rippling script and power-packed performances. The one surely goes to Paresh Rawal, for till the end you keep wondering whether he is a genius, an incredible or a genius idiot or has been labeled mastermind by sheer luck!
