So if u want a useful review on Mahabaleshwar after cutting all the crap then read this one.I have been there twice, both times from Pune.

Route: Exact 130 kms from Kothrud in Pune. Take Pune-Bangalore highway, Keep going straight. After about 90 kms there is a right turn (from WAI) and a board there says 'Mahabalshwar right', take that. Again keep going straight and you will reach mahabalshwar after crossing Panchgani.

Route condition: Excellent road since it is a part of golden quadrilateral. You can easily go at 120 km/hr if u hve a fast car and are a freak at driving. After taking a right from wai, the road passes through village areas but nice drive though u cant speed much there. This strech is 40 kms. Takes around 2.5 hours.

En-route stops: Dont stop anywhere except at Mapro factory midway b/w panchgani and mahabalshwar. u can buy lots of mapro squashes, eat awesome pizzas, etc

Main attractions:

• eating fresh strawberries and strawberries with cream (is very very famous there, u'll get it everywhere)

Buy fesh strawberries from road side restaurants on the way from Panchhani to Mahabaleshwar for Rs.50/kg

-Tableland: Asia's largest highest flat land. near panchgani. Panchgani is 25 km before mahabalshwar

-For rest of siteseeing, its nothing gr8, just few points frm where u get good view, definitely hire a guide since u get lost in jungle while finding these points, roads for sight seeing are confusing. He'll take arnd 100 rupees

-Honey farms: farms where they keep honey bees to make honey- its amazing to know and see how they do it. again from panchgani to mahabalshwar u'll spot a honey bee farm

Accomodation:

Best place to stay is Sherwood resort, with swimming pool, badminton, table tennis and other games. But its expensive and usually full. its around Rs.3000 for a double occupancy room

If u want budget acco, there are n number of options. As soon as u enter mahabalshwar, you will see many guides, ask one of them to sit in your car and he'll get u just the type of hotel u want. They dont even charge anything as they get commissions from hotels. But pls be kind and tip them 20 to 50 rupees.

Food: Eat anywhere in the market or your hotel. I have been unable to find very good food.

You can also hire bicycles and go around the city. There is a cycle shop near market and rentals are arnd 20 rupees for 30 mins- too cheap.

Avoid summers as its a bit hot.

Believe me, you're gonna love this place as Maharashtra has not got any good hill stations apart from this one. I'm going again next week (3rd time) with my wife, but this time from Mumbai.
