We chanced upon The Magazine Store while strolling down Church Street, more famous for its vast array of restaurants and pubs.
This treasure is located in the basement of Prestige RR building opposite Oasis Restaurant. A big signboard on the street drew our attention. Walked in more out of curiosity than any particular desire to buy magazines.
What a pleasant surprise awaited us. A vast array of magazines are displayed on a series of tables laid out in parallel rows in a huge cavernous room. I do not think there is any Indian or any English language international magazine that can not be found here. If they do not have it, they will get it for you. Recent back issues of any magazine are sold at substantial discounts.
I also noticed some books on the shelves lining the four walls of the store but did not pay too much attention to them as I was distracted by the unbelievable variety of magazines.
The staff are friendly and courteous. The owner [presumably] who was sitting at the cash counter was also very helpful. We asked him to suggest a good restaurant for us to have our dinner, and in consultation with his brother, they heartily recommended the Oasis across the road - excellent choice as it turned out to be.
I have been to big book store chains in foreign countries and in my opinion, Bangalore's modest The Magazine Store can put them all to shame wheremagazines - and courtesy - are concerned.
I recommend this store as a must visit, even if just for curiosity sake, especially for those who frequent Church Street.
