Madurai Kamaraj University was initiated on 6 February 1966, in view of the Center of the University of Madras, situated at Madurai .Separation Education of the college was set up in 1971.
In 1978 the name of the college was changed to Madurai Kamaraj University to respect the K. Kamaraj, previous Chief Minister of Madras State.
