When I first saw previews for "Mad Max: Fury Road" I thought they had finally found the right director to bring the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max to life. As it turns out, the right director was the same one who had made the three previous Mad Max films, George Miller.
You can feel the frenetic energy in this film from the first frame. Imagine a project that has been brewing for 30 years in the mind of one man who continued to add one element after another, year-after-year.
The explosion of that build-up is "Mad Max: Fury Road".
ury Road" is the labor of a filmmaker who had 30 years to explore a concept, love it, refine it and finally bring it to life. There is a depth and detail to this film that puts George Miller in a rarefied pantheon of directors. This film is his seminal work.
"Mad Max: Fury Road" has a consistent theme and repeating symbolism that belies its simple exterior. It's easy to miss amid the flamethrowers, and explosions and muscle cars; but it's there.
