Director: K.V. Reddy Producer: B. Nagi Reddy and 'Chakrapani' (Vijaya Productions) I have seen this movie more than 25 times. One of the all time great movie in Telugu films. Even today, it is considered as the best screenplay. No other movie tried to reach its heights so far. Maya Bazaar (released on May 27, 1957) is a Telugu mythological movie based on characters from the Mahabharata. This is one of the evergreen epics on Telugu silver screen. Even till today, this film has a special place for its extraordinary screenplay.Writer pingali garu.....did great script work and also discovered few telugu new words too.. in this script.

STORY:- Lord Krishna?s elder brother, Balarama, vows to get his daughter Sasirekha married to Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna and Subhadra. Even the couple Abhimanyu and Sasirekha like each other since childhood. Later, fate has it that Pandavas lose their kingdom and wealth to Kauravas in the famous gamble of the Mahabharata. At this juncture, Balarama goes to Hastinapura to bash Kauravas for the unjust gamble, but is cooled down by the respect they shower towards him, thanks to cunning Sakuni. Pleased, he also grants their wish to get Duryodhana's son Lakshmana Kumara married to his daughter Sasirekha. Revati, the wife of Balarama, is happy with their proposal, as she was waiting for an opportunity to cancel the previous proposal with Abhimanyu, following the status of financial downfall of Pandavas. When Abhimanyu learns this and gets furious, Lord Krishna sends them off from their capital city of Dwaraka, instructing the charioteer to take them to Ghatothkacha's place without letting Subhadra or Abhimanyu knowing this.

Ghatothkacha, son of Bheema and Hidimbi and thus a cousin of Abhimanyu, stays there with his mother and his followers. After an initial wrangle between the cousins who do not recognize each other, Ghatothkacha takes them home. Subhadra tells the whole story to Hidimbi, and Ghatothkacha, who overhears the whole thing, gets furious and wants to destroy Kauravas and Yadavas. Subhadra calms him down and suggests to him to that he should go see Lord Krishna and act as directed, as he's favorable to the proposal to get Abhimanyu and Sasirekha married. Ghatothkacha, who inherits magical powers from his maternal origin, goes to Dwaraka and finds Lord Krishna with difficulty. Following his orders, he abducts Sasirekha and takes her to his place and returns with Chinnamaya, the guru at his ashram, and two of his disciples, Lambu and Jambu.

Following Lord Krishna's orders again, he takes the place of Sasirekha, thanks to his magical transformation of oneself. As Kauravas come to Dwaraka and the marriage ceremony starts ostentatiously, Chinnamaya, Lambu, and Jambu help Ghatothkacha in creating frenzy at the place. Right before the actual marriage, Ghatothkacha comes out in his real self, exposes the Kauravas' evil plans, and teaches them a lesson.

The film concludes in the marriage of Abhimanyu and Sasirekha, following Balarama & Revathi's realization of Lord Krishna's role. The actors from this film have become legendary super stars in the Telugu film industry; all these stars have ruled Telugu film industry for more than 3 decades. Akkineni Nageswara Rao plays the role of Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna & Subhadra S.V. Ranga Rao plays Ghatothkacha, the son of Bheema & Hidimbi Savitri plays Sasirekha, the daughter of Balarama Gummadi plays Balarama N.T. Rama Rao plays Krishna Chayadevi appears as Revati, opposite Balarama Sandhya plays Rukmini, opposite Krishna Rshyendramani plays Subhadra Suryakantham plays Hidimbi Relangi appears as Lakshmana Kumara, son of Duryodhana Mukkamala appears as Duryodhana CSR Anjaneyulu appears as Sakuni. Music by Ghantasala is all-time hit and evergreen.

Saluri Rajeswara Rao is however said to have composed four songs for the movie. New Telugu words like tasmadeeyulu for this movie. Marcus Bartley, an English cinematographer, handled the camera and special effects for this mythological movie to bring out great viewing experience, along with the art director Madhavapeddi Gokhale. Pingali pens the dialogues and lyrics for this movie; the story is based on a 1936 version movie with the same title (which was in turn based on the much celebrated stageplay by the famous Surabhi theatrical troupe.). some intresting points I mean some facts abt the movie..:- 1. Ghantasala Ratnakumar, son of the music director Ghantasla Venkateswara Rao, recorded the sound of galloping horses for the song bhaLi bhaLi bhaLi dEvaa... sung and enacted by singer Madhavapeddi Satyam. 2. S. Rajeswara Rao composed neevEnaa..., laahiri laahiri..., nee kOsame nE jeevinchunadi... and another song (idEnTO sudden gaa marchipOyaanu). 3. Pandavas are not shown anywhere in the movie, though references are made, and a miniature silhoutte-like image of Draupadi is shown in inset. 4. Master Babji, Bezawada Rajaratnam (guest appearance - vinnaavaa yaSOdammaa... song). Njoy readers.
