Having lived in the midst of beaches always and now since they are mobbed by the never ending tourist season in Goa, we seek places which are more quieter, serene and away from the maddening crowd. And, I have been lucky always to find something new, every time I thought of an outing.
This time, I found an excellent, cozy farmhouse - Maachli home stay. Lets straigtaway get to details:
Where? It is Situated in a tiny and peaceful village called Parule, in konkan coastal belt at the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra(near to Kudal). The place has cottages built inside a coconut & beetle plantation(called Kulagar in konkani) also having Banana trees and other spices.
The word Maachli(in Maalvani language) means a hut built at a height to keep a watch on the crop.
Hosts: The hosts are nice and soft-hearted people and meeting them, you will witness a flavor of konkani people.They will personally cater to all your needs right from a warm welcome at the main gate. You would love their hospitality.
Place: If you are used to a busy city life, this place will look to you, a different world all together! As you walk along to get to your cottage, you need to cross a stream/rivulet-and the experience is amazing. It has thick plantation of coconut trees, so much so that you would hardly see sunlight around.
Cottages: The cottages are aesthetically engineered, simple, attractive, natural but with all modern techniques and facilities. Having wooden interiors, bed is nice and comfortable, the bathroom is again nice and clean. The only precaution one needs to take is make sure you keep the door closed always as since this place has lot of greenery, there are chances that insects, serpents or similar creatures may get in the rooms.
There are about 6 of them which are independent and away from each other.
Note: There is no TV, no wi-fi.
The owner is happy to explain about the project and also ready to take you to an early morning nature trail where one can see various birds.
Other activities: Pottery, village visit and nothing much, but don't forget this place is not Goa and you are not here to do water sports or other adventure activities, you are here to relax and enjoy the nature. If at all, you have time and beaches interests you, there are a few of them at a 30-40 mins driving distance. Bhogave, Shiroda, Vengurla etc. However kids are likely to get bored.
Food: There is a kitchen where the local ladies will prepare delicious Malwani dishes. It's a very free and dynamic environment and you can discuss your food preferences. During our trip, we carried special Fish ourselves which they cooked for us while we carried chicken and they were happy to let us barbecue it.
Price: 5-6k. Looked somewhat pricey to me!
However, if you are looking for a hideout, offbeat and quiet place, a lovely tropical paradise away from all the hustle bustle of the city, this 1-2 nights getaway is ideal.
