Last week I had guests for dinner. Since I was given a short notice (just few hours), I was not prepared at all. I did not want to order food from restaurant, as my guests certainly don?t fancy Tandoori stuff but love anything that has RICE as staple ingredient. With my apron on, I immediately swung into action.

First and foremost I decided to cook 4 cups of rice to make ?variety rice items? along with apna sambhar & rasam. I stuck to our traditional LEMON, COCONUT & CURD RICE. The last one had to be my favourite Tamarind Rice or Puliogare as it is called in Tamil. It?s easier to prepare the former kinds of rice but tamarind rice is not so easy. Usually we have to boil tamarind water, add jaggery, salt, chilli etc to get the required concentrate. As time was at premium, I frantically browsed through my kitchen shelves. BINGO! I finally managed to locate MTR?S PULIOGARE POWDER MIX.

Phew! My problems were solved in a jiffy. MTR has wonderful range of condiments, & ready-to-eat packs. This Puliogare mix is boon as it can be served in few minutes.

Its available in 200g and also larger packs. Its ingredients are tamarind concentrate, groundnut, salt, coriander, chilli, copra, curry leaves, sugar, dessicated coconut powder, gingelly seeds, jaggery, pepper, mustard, fenugreek, turmeric, Bengal gram dal, black gram dal, cumin, refined vegetable oil & asafoetida. Its 100%natural and has no preservatives.

We have to heat ½ measure of oil in a vessel, add 1 measure of puliogare powder and stir it for 1-2 minutes on a low flame. Then mix it with cooked rice until its absorbed. Now its ready to serve. It has a tangy taste that is just irresistible. It tastes fabulous when served with fried Vadams (a kind of rice papad).

My guests were indeed thrilled and had sumptuous dinner.

This is very common in south Indian cuisine. So all those who want to be adventurous in experimenting food avenues (if u haven?t done so far), can explore their taste buds by going for this.

(My tip for this is just ensure the rice is cooked perfectly, neither too soggy nor too raw. Just add little oil to rice before it?s cooked. When done, spread it on a wet plate immediately so that the rice grains are separated and don?t stick to each other).

I have tried various other mixes that are available in the market, but MTR beats all of them. Just give it a try and let me know!!!
